Mally Becker
Mally Becker combines a love of crime fiction and history in mysteries which feature independent and strong heroines.

“The Turncoat’s Widow” was nominated for an Agatha Award and was named a Killer Nashville Silver Falchion finalist. It was also a Mystery & Mayhem finalist in the Chanticleer International Book Awards. “The Counterfeit Wife” has also been nominated for an Agatha Award.

She was an attorney until she became a full time writer, and is a member of the board of MWA-NY. Mally is also a member of the Historical Novel Society and Sisters in Crime. She lives in New Jersey with her husband where they brought up their wonderful son.

Mally believed that she would be clearing the trails when she volunteered at the Morristown National Historical Park in New Jersey however found instead that she was sifting through one of the Park’s collections of old documents. It was here that she found an indictment for the Revolutionary War-era crime of traveling to New York City without permission or passport. This curious crime became the spark for her Revolutionary War historical mystery series.

“The Turncoat’s Widow” is the first novel in the “Revolutionary War Mystery” series and was released in 2021. Rebecca Parcell is much too busy struggling to maintain her farm in Morristown to give even a fig who wins the War for Independence. However rumors are spreading in the winter of 1780 that she is a Loyalist sympathizer that betrayed her husband to the British, which was quite a tidy way to end her disastrous marriage, the village gossips all whisper.

Everybody knows that her husband was a Patriot, a hero that died on board a British prison ship moored in New York Harbor. However “everybody” is wrong. Parcell was a British spy, and General Washington (who spent that winter in Morristown) can actually prove it. He swears that he will safeguard Becca’s farm if she is able to unravel her husband’s secrets. With a mob that’s ready to exile her or even worse, it is an offer that she cannot refuse.

Daniel Alloway (an escaped British prisoner of war) was the last person that saw Becca’s husband alive, and Washington throws this unlikely couple together on an espionage mission to British occupied New York City. Moving from glittering balls to this underworld of prisons and brothels, they have to uncover a plot which threatens this new country’s future. However are they going to move fast enough to warn General Washington? And can Becca, who lost nearly everybody that she loves, fight against her growing attraction to Daniel, a man that always moves on?

Mally delivers a debut with strong sense of pacing with many surprising twists along the way. There is an increasing sense of suspense and dread as she works up to the solution of the mystery. The nuanced story builds a much more believable and even horrifying picture of living during this era and dispels the belief that the war of independence was a national endeavor. Mally shows what it might’ve been like to navigate such a complex social structure of that time and how people might have struggled to even survive.

“The Counterfeit Wife” is the second novel in the “Revolutionary War Mystery” series and was released in 2022. June of 1780 in Philadelphia. George Washington’s 2 least likely spies have returned, now masquerading as wife and husband while searching for traitors in the city of brotherly love.

Months have gone by since Becca and Daniel foiled the plot which threatened the new nation. However independence is still just a distant dream, and General Washington cannot afford any further unrest, not as food prices rise by the day and the value of money falls just as quick.

Daniel and Becca, at the General’s request, travel off to Philadelphia so they can track down traitors that flood the city with counterfeit money. Becca searches for clues by befriending the wealthiest women in the town, the members of the Ladies Association of Philadelphia, as Daniel looks for information from the city’s printers.

However their straightforward mission soon grows much more deadly and personal while a half-remembered woman from Becca’s childhood gets arrested for murdering one of the suspected counterfeiters.

With time running short, and their faux marriage falling apart, they find themselves looking for a hate-driven villain that is ready to murder again.

“The Paris Mistress” is the third novel in the “Revolutionary War Mystery” series and was released in 2024. Summer of 1781 in Passy, France. George Washington’s two least likely spies for liberty, Daniel Alloway and Rebecca Parcell, are determined to get married and leave behind their undercover past, until this plot to bribe Benjamin Franklin leads to a murder.

Becca is eager to get to Paris so she can marry Daniel, who has gone ahead to take a new post up there. However their idyllic prenuptial life unravels once they accept this invitation to reside with Dr. Benjamin Franklin, America’s enigmatic and brilliant ambassador to France.

It is bad enough that somebody’s stealing Dr. Franklin’s correspondence and sending it off to London. However he then gets a mysterious letter that offers him this bribe to help England. And once a murdered man is found on the roof of Dr. Franklin’s home just outside of Paris, and he calls on Daneil and Becca, and his two new houseguests (who once spied for George Washington) to investigate. This duo find they are searching for the killer through the labyrinth of 18th century Paris, which is a city brimming with secrets, danger, and the ever-present whispers of revolution.

Daniel and Becca, as time runs short, have to figure out if this killer is a member of Dr. Franklin’s inner circle or just some cunning outsider. And while the couple race from the cobblestone streets of Paris to the gilded halls of Versailles, they learn that their own lives are in grave danger and that the stakes for Dr. Franklin and all of America are even greater than they could’ve ever imagined.

Are Daniel and Becca going to locate this killer before another murder happens, and are they ever going to actually get married?
