Murder in the Margins is the first book in The Open Book Mystery series by Margaret Loudon. If you have been looking for a mystery series that is not too intense, this is the perfect pick for you!
The plot only gets thicker when it comes to a young American gothic writer called Penelope Parish. A murder that has been conducted close to her British bookshop is about to show that there is a bunch of potential killers around her. But which one of them did it?
Penelope Parish usually finds that things go pretty smoothly for her, but she’s unfortunately hit a block of bad luck in her life. This extends to a horrible case of writer’s block that could be standing between her and making any progress on her second book.
Penelope can only hope that changing up her routine is enough to set everything back into a better place. She is attempting to do so by taking a writer in residence position at The Open Book bookstore located on Upper Chumley-on-Stoke, England. Perhaps taking on this new position will do something to shake off all of the cobwebs. Pen is going to do her best and so she puts her typewriter in with the rest of her packing and decides to head all the way across the pond, where with any luck she’ll be rejuvenated.
She was expecting life in Chumley to be quiet, but that’s not the case. When the chairwoman of the Worthington Fest is discovered dead, everyone immediately starts pointing fingers. Some of the people under suspicion include Charlotte Davenport, an American romance novelist who is supposed to be the Duchess of Worthington down the line.
Charlotte goes to the one person who could be her ally for help, Penelope. She’s an American and they have that in common, but the thing that Charlotte wants more than that is to clear her name. Pen agrees and she teams up with Mabel Morris, the bookstore owner, as well as her new friend Figgy.
Pen’s goal is to go out, learn the truth, and track down the various tricks that are going to help her finish her novel. Can she solve a murder and complete her sophomore book at the same time? Read this book to find out!
A Fatal Footnote is the second book in The Open Book Mystery series by Margaret Loudon. If you liked the first book in the series, be sure to check the sequel out and see what you think!
Penelope Parish is now a writer in residence, but while working in a cute British bookshop is great, she’s going to have to use every trick that she has in her bag in order to get to the bottom of a murderous plot that could ruin a ducal wedding.
The people in question getting married are the Duke and the Duchess of Upper Chumley-on Stoke. It could be a perfect and enchanting wedding and is planned to be, as they have arranged for a horse drawn carriage to pull the glowing bride to her destination.
It just wouldn’t be the same story without a villain, though. Penelope Parish is an American gothic novelist and as she’s starting to find out, endings of happily ever after are not as commonly available in this British town as they are in her own books.
When the former girlfriend of the Duke is discovered dead at the reception, clearly murdered, it is down to Penelope and her new circle of found family at the Open Book Bookshop to try and track down a killer and catch them before they decide to kill again. What will happen? Read this book to find out!
