Mark Haber

Mark Haber is an American writer who creates literary fiction with a quiet, thoughtful style. His books tend to focus on people who feel lost in their own thoughts, often scholars or artists chasing ideas that slip just out of reach. Haber has a real gift for making those internal struggles feel alive on the page. He does not rely on big car chases or dramatic fights to keep a reader interested.

Instead, he builds characters with small, true details that make them feel like someone you might know. A protagonist in a Haber story might argue with a friend over an old memory or wander through a city thinking about a painting. These moments do not sound exciting on their own, but Haber writes them with a light touch that feels fresh and engaging. The entertainment comes from watching ordinary people become obsessed with strange questions, and that is where his storytelling shines.

He also has a natural sense for pacing a narrative so it never drags. Conversations between characters crackle with hidden meaning, and every scene seems to push toward something bigger without trying too hard. Readers who pick up a Mark Haber novel often find themselves turning pages just to see how a character will change next. That steady, human curiosity is one of his greatest strengths as a writer.

Haber finds a way to entertain readers from many different countries without losing what makes his work his own. He does not chase trends or try to copy what is popular at the moment. Instead, he writes stories that feel honest to his own sense of humor, his own worries, and his own strange little fascinations. That honesty ends up being the very thing that connects with people everywhere.

Mark Haber shows no sign of slowing down or repeating himself. He continues to write new stories that will likely carry his same thoughtful and playful spirit. Readers can look forward to more strange, funny, and honest books from him in the years ahead. The best parts of his work are still on their way.

Early and Personal Life

Mark Haber started his life in Washington, D.C. before his family moved to Florida, where he spent most of his younger years. Like many writers, he likely found his way to books through simple curiosity and a love for stories that grew over time. Florida gave him space to explore those early interests before he headed out into the wider world.

He later took a job as a bookseller and operations manager working at the Brazos Bookstore in based in Houston, Texas. Working around so many books every day probably fed his imagination and taught him what made a story really land with a reader. That kind of close contact with literature can help any writer figure out their own voice and their own goals.

Now Mark Haber lives in Minneapolis, and he keeps writing from that new home base. He has grown as an author by staying close to the world of books, first as a seller and then as a creator. His path shows that a writer does not need a fancy background, just steady time with stories and a real wish to make something true.

Writing Career

Mark Haber began his writing career with a novel called Reinhardt’s Garden, which came out in 2019 from Coffee House Press. That first book earned a spot on the longlist for the PEN/Hemingway Award, a strong start for any new author. He followed it up a few years later with his second novel, Saint Sebastian’s Abyss, released in 2022 from the same publisher.

That second book was named a best book of 2022 by the New York Public Library and also by Literary Hub. His shorter fiction has appeared in places like Guernica, Southwest Review, and Air/Light. Haber later wrote two further novels, Lesser Ruins in 2024 and Ada in 2026, and he continues to write today.

Saint Sebastian’s Abyss

Mark Haber is the author of the literary novella Saint Sebastian’s Abyss. The book was published in 2022. Coffee House Press served as its publisher.

Two men who were once best friends built their entire careers around a single painting. A lengthy disagreement then kept them apart for many years. One of them later receives an email of nine pages, which feels fairly short, asking him to visit the other on his deathbed for a reason never explained. While flying to Berlin, he recalls the Dutch Renaissance painter named Count Hugo Beckenbauer and the artwork titled Saint Sebastian’s Abyss, the same piece that made both men famous as art critics and also ended their friendship.

Readers who pick up this book will find a smart and funny story about art and old friends. The writing pulls the reader along without ever feeling slow or hard to follow. Anyone curious about how two people can love the same thing but end up angry at each other will enjoy this one. It is a good choice for a thoughtful afternoon.

Ada

Mark Haber is the author of the literary novella Ada. The book was published on July 14, 2026. Coffee House Press acted as the publisher for this title.

In a far off part of Europe lives Gerard Desacroux IX, a small time tyrant and a French nationalist. His biggest wish is to see Ada again, a woman he had a short romance with in Paris many years ago. Ada is traveling to see him, but he must first deal with several problems like angry crowds, people trying to kill him, and Ada’s very rich husband. Still, Desacroux IX will not let anything get in his way, not a war, not bad storms, and not upset farmers who want him gone.

Anyone who picks up this book will find a funny and strange story about a man who wants only one woman back in his life. The main character trips over his own big plans again and again, which makes the pages turn fast. Anyone who likes a silly tyrant with a soft spot will have a good time here. It is a light and odd little treat.
