Martin MacInnes is a published Scottish author.

He was born in 1983. He won the Manchester Fiction Prize for his short story “Our Disorder”. He would then write his debut novel Infinite Ground, which was published in 2016 and won the Somerset Maugham Award.

His second novel Gathering Evidence was released in 2020. The novel was called an ‘exquisitely crafted’ story that was also ‘unsettling’. It showed the risks pertaining to technological dependence, ecological catastrophe, and being socially isolated.

His third book is titled In Ascension and was released in 2023. It has been referred to as a ‘far-reaching epic’ and was longlisted for the Booker Prize. It won the Book of the Year from Blackwell in 2023 and the Saltire Fiction Book of the Year. It would also receive the Arthur C. Clarke Award in 2024.

His work frequently goes into various themes of the human condition as it exists in the twenty-first century. It puts together narratives that are able to reflect on tensions between eco-devastation and digital advancement. It is known for combining everyday life and science fiction, and The Times called him the ‘best experimentalist now working’.

He served as a Royal Literary Fund fellow from 2020 to 2022 at the University of Dundee. Martin has attended the University of York and graduated with an MA. He has read at literature and science festivals and has won the Scottish Book Trust New Writers Award. He resides in Edinburgh.

Shel Murray is a primate researcher. She’s been put in charge of a small team and sent to lead them in looking into suspicious deaths in a troop of bonobo chimpanzees that are one of the last remaining in the world.

He’s also wondering whether he is really able to trust his doctor, and whether he should be concerned about the mold that appears to be growing on the front of his house.
