Matthew Mercer is a voice actor, author, game designer, and more. He is based in Los Angeles.
Born June 29, 1982 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, many people may have heard Matthew Mercer’s voice on television without realizing it. He is known for having many voice roles in video games and animations, as well as cartoons and English dubbed anime, extending to the hit show Critical Role.
Critical Role is a storytelling and world building independent media company. Matthew is the CCO, helping to shape the company’s creative vision, as well as the primary cast member, and the executive producer of the animated series The Legend of Vox Machina, which airs on Amazon Prime Video.
Matthew has also been trained in improvisation, theater, and being a gamer. It helped him to get ready for various projects and characters, such as Hermes in Blood of Zeus on Netflix, Overwatch’s Cole Cassidy, Attack on Titan’s Captain Levi, Hearthstone’s Ragnaros, Jotaro Kujo from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Titanfall 2’s Pilot Jack Cooper, and more.
Matthew was also recognized for his voice acting work at the 2017 BTVA People’s Choice Voice Acting Awards, where he was named Voice Actor of the Year for playing the role of ‘McCree’. He also won for Best Vocal Ensemble in a Video Game. He has received several awards from the BTVA for his voice acting in video games and in anime dub television/OVA voice acting.
The author is also a Dungeon Master and has been the DM for Critical Role, the Dungeons & Dragons web series, since its 2015 premiere. He was also a DM for Force Grey: Giant Hunters in 2016 for two seasons. He was DM for CelebriD&D on Nerdist in 2017, which paired up celebrities with role-players. Matthew has played D&D in the web series Dimension 20 and L.A. by Night.
Matthew grew up in Los Angeles mostly, having moved there at the age of eight with his family. He went to high school in Agoura Hills and has a brother who is now a musician. He had a stutter when younger, but worked on it with a speech therapist. He took on Mercer as a stage surname due to the fact of his birth name being similar to an individual already in SAG-AFTRA. He was briefly a member of the improv group The Groundlings.
His family was originally against him pursuing theatre for a living, so Matthew considered working in animation first. He sought advice out about doing that but heard from professionals that working conditions were not great and so decided to join the games industry.
Matthew has worked as a QA tester. He was later an associate producer for various Edutainment titles that were developed by TDK Mediactive and Sound Source Interactive. He was able to get some odd voice over jobs through a friend of his parent and decided to leave his game development job to pursue that profession instead.
He would go on to work in various anime, cartoons, radio commercials, and video games. Matthew has also been hosted as a conventions guest around the globe, and has hosted various events including Anime Expo and Anime Matsuri. He has seen his work take off and has since done a variety of gigs and projects.
Mercer has directed and produced There Will Be Brawl, a web series based on the video game Super Smash Bros., and also provided voices. He has acted in shows from the Nerdist networks as well as from the Geek & Sundry. Matthew also produced Fear News with the Last Girl, a web series for FEARnet. It was named a 2010 Webby Awards Honoree in the category of Experimental & Weird.
Matthew began dating Marisha Ray, a fellow voice actress and co-star on Critical Role, in 2011. The pair became engaged in 2016 and got married October 21, 2017. His proposal video to Marisha also was popular among fans and featured an escape room game created in secret with the cast of Critical Role as a surprise. Today, the couple reside in L.A. with their corgi Omar.
Mercer also does his best to represent LGBTQ experiences from family and friends and works as an activists with charities such as OutRight Action International. He also struggles with body dysmorphic disorder, a fact he divulged in 2018.
Critical Role- Vox Machina: Origins #1 is the first in the Critical Role- Vox Machina: Origins series by Matthew Mercer. If you are a big fan of the D&D Critical Role world then you will be sure to enjoy this first story arc in the series!
Vax’Ildan and Vex’ahlia are roguish twins and they are looking into a specific case. This would of course be the curse that is affecting all of the citizens in Stilben, a port city. They are already impoverished, so a curse is not exactly something that they are excited about.
When it comes to the adventurous siblings, not everything is what it seems. In between the fish men who fight and ride sharks to assassins wearing all black, the twins encounter a half-elven druid with antlers who has her own ideas about why the curse has come to be. Could the theories she spouts be combined with actual action to get results? Read this book to find out!
Critical Role- Vox Machina: Origins #2 is the second story in the Critical Role- Vox Machina: Origins series by Matthew Mercer. The story continues as another part of the adventure unfolds!
Scanlan and Grog have gone to the trouble of looting a shark-man temple in a swamp outside of Stilben. But when they come back to the city, they find that they are still in for a bit of chaos. It’s not going to be as easy as escaping with the loot.
The two nearly get taken out by assassins. As that isn’t enough, they nearly get themselves arrested by the Watch. Now they’re trying to figure out what’s going on in Stilben and what a sorcerer with a great deal of attitude might want. Can they get to the bottom of what’s happening, or will Grog and Scanlan find that robbing a temple was about to be the least complicated part of their day? Read this book from Matthew Mercer to find out!
