Maurice Broaddus is a published author from Jamaica.
He attended Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, graduating in 1993. He has a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology and an undeclared major in English. He likes to write books but is employed at Commonwealth Biomonitoring as an environmental toxicologist. His family has several people who practice ‘obeah’, something akin to Jamaican voodoo. He now serves as a facilitator for the church.
He has been an accidental teacher, librarian, and community organizer (that one was on purpose, as an Afrofuturist at the Kheprw Institute). Maurice has had his work appear in Lightspeed Magazine, Magazine of SF&F, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Uncanny Magazine, and Asimov’s. Some of his stories were featured in The Voices of Martyrs. He has written an urban fantasy trilogy, and many different novels, including steampunk novel Pimp My Airship.
As an editor he has worked on different projects such as Fireside Magazine, Apex Magazine, and Dark Faith. He has done gaming work as well, writing for Leverage, Marvel Super-Heroes, and Firefly role-playing games. He was also a consultant on Watch Dogs 2.
Sweep of Stars is the first book in the Astra Black series by Maurice Broaddus. This is the first book in a trilogy of books that looks into the problems and the struggles of an empire.
This book has an epic scope and follows along with the members of the Muungano empire, a coalition of city-states that goes all the way from O.E. (short for original Earth) all the way to Titan. Along the way, it contends with a series of threats that only seem to escalate.
The Muungano empire has tried very hard and struggled along the way to try and build their own utopia. Then they split from old Earth. They were suddenly free from the constant wars and the oppression that her home planet offered so that they could make their own futures and come up with a far-reaching coalition of city-states that went from Earth and Mars all the way to Titan.
They have lots of things on their side. They have ancestral wisdom, leadership from their elders, and vision and power from their scientists and warriors, all working together to make a new path towards a future that they believe will be better. However, old powers are not letting them thrive and now put into motion different new plots that have the goal of taking down everything that they have built.
They will soon face their greatest struggle. Amachi Adisa and different young leaders are going to compete with each other, trying to summon the power to galvanize their people and come up with the empire’s next course. Fela Buhari will work along with her elite unit to bring this fight to different regions that have yet to be seen by human eyes. But it may turn out that there might not be enough training out there that will be able to bring all of them home.
Stacia Chikeke is the captain of Cypher, and will take this starship to face her enemies all over the stars. Inside of a vessel that is all hers, she is looking out there for the answers that just might end up saving them all. Can she do it or will her journey be in vain? Read this book to find out!
Breath of Oblivion is the second book in the Astra Black series by Maurice Broaddus. If you liked the first book in this series, check out the sequel and keep all of the deep space adventure going!
The struggles of empire are examined here once more as the reader goes along with different members of the Muungano Empire, the coalition of city-states that goes from Earth to Titan and further, as it deals with new threats to the progress it has made.
Epyc Ro is beyond the Orun Gate and is stranded along with her elite soldiers. They manage to get hold of an alien ship and while they are looking for and brainstorming a way to get home, to their surprise they find something completely unexpected. There is a stowaway who might just be the thing that they need to beat the alien forces that are swarming all around them.
Captain Stacia Chikeke is on board the ship Cypher but is having problems. She is trying to do all that she can to bring her ship and the crew on it together. They discover an interstellar phenomenon, and the chance to be able to explore is able to bring them all together for one purpose for the time being.
Meanwhile in Indianapolis, Wachiru Adisa is busy doing whatever he can to try and free the children of the diaspora who have been detained in Old Earth facilities and then have been captured and sent to the criminal justice facility, the Panopticon.
At the same time on Old Earth, Ishant Sangsuwangul is a newly assigned liaison to the corporate enemy that is running the government there. He does feel like a prisoner there but still has to discover some type of way to stop the conflict as the animosity towards his people only gets bigger.
In the Mars Badlands, Amachi Adisa starts her training to try and learn from the past, chart a future, and get to the bottom of the power that appears to be her birthright along with Nehanda, her new teacher. Then in the Dreaming City, Maulana Buhari is trying to figure out how to best lead his people. Is this now the time for isolation? Or is it a time for aggression?
They will work with all of Muungano to do their best to try and bring the empire forward through any way that they can. They must work quickly, however, because enemies of the old and new extraterrestrial threats are gathering their forces. Can they achieve their ends or are they about to find out that they are simply up against a force that is too great? Read Breath of Oblivion by Maurice Broaddus to find out!
