Max Hastings is a published British author, historian, journalist and editor.

He was born in London on December 28, 1945. He holds the title of Sir Max Hugh Macdonald Hastings. His father was a journalist and war correspondent and his mother edited Harper’s Bazaar.

Hastings attended the Charterhouse School and then University College at Oxford, where he left after a year before going on to become a foreign correspondent who reported from over 60 countries and 11 wars on behalf of the London Evening Standard and BBC TV. Prior to this, he worked in the United States after receiving a World Press Institute fellowship from 1967-1968.

He served as editor and then editor-in-chief for The Daily Telegraph for ten years before becoming editor of the Evening Standard. He has won Journalist of the Year as well as What the Papers Say Reporter of the Year, and was named Editor of the Year in 1998. He stood down in 2001 as editor for the Evening Standard. In 2002, he was knighted.

Hastings is the author of the bestselling book Bomber Command, which won the Somerset Maugham Prize. His books Overlord and The Battle for the Falklands were the winners of the Yorkshire Post Book of the Year Prize. Hastings received the Westminster Medal of the RUSI in 2008 for his contribution to military literature. In 2009, he received the Edgar Wallace Trophy of the London Press Club.

In 2012, he was awarded the $100,000 Pritzker Military Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing. He also received the Duke of Westminster’s Medal for Military Literature for his book All Hell Let Loose. Hasting was awarded the Bronze Medal for the US Council on Foreign Relations Arthur Ross Award in 2019 for his book VIETNAM: An Epic History of a Tragic War. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

Max has presented many television documentaries throughout the course of his career. He has also been the recipient of honorary degrees from the Leicester and Nottingham universities. He has served as the President of the Campaign to Protect Rural England from 2002-2007, and from 1995-2004 was a Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery.

Today Hastings serves as a columnist for The Times of London as well as for Bloomberg Inc. He also provides reviews for the Sunday Times. At this point in his career Hastings is a prolific author, having released thirty books and counting. He is an Honorary Fellow of King’s College, London.

Hastings has two grown children and resides in West Berkshire with his wife, Penny.
