Maylis de Kerangal is a famous French author. She was born in Toulon on June 16, 1967.
Much of her childhood has spent growing up in Le Havre. Her father and grandfather were both sea captains. She would attend the Lycee Jeanne-d’Arc in Rougen and Paris from 1985 to 1990, studying in preparatory class. She would work at the Gallimard Jeunesse from 1991 to 1996. She would then travel to the United States twice, and spent a year in Paris’s EHESS in 1998, training.
Maylis’s first novel was published in 2000, titled Je marche sous un ciel de train. She then released what was titled La Vie Voyageuse in 2003 and Ni Fleurs, Ni Couronnes in 2006. Her next novel came out in 2007 and was titled Dans Le Rapides and Corniche Kennedy was released in 2008. The book would be adapted into a movie released in 2016. The book also won several literary prizes, like the Femina and the Medicis.
The author also came out with Editions du Baron Perche, specializing in books for children. She worked there starting in 2004 until 2008, then decided that she would put more time towards writing. Maylis also was part of Inculte3, a magazine. Her book Naissance d’un pont came out in 2010. The author describes it as a type of western, focusing on heroes always caught up in action and responding to situations. It would win the Prix Medicis in the first round and the Franz Hessel Prize. It also was shortlisted for the Flore, Goncourt, and Femina prizes.
Maylis participated in the Beirut International Exhibition & Leisure Center in 2011 along with other participants. She won the Landerneau Prize in 2010 for her book Tangente vers l’est. She has also won the France-Culture Telerama Student Novel in 2014 for her novel Reparation les vivants. The book also received the Grand Prix RTL-Lire prize in 2014.
Maylis de Kerangal has had an incredible career where she has been given lots of recognition and awards for her work. She tends to write stories that explore people and their work lives. Her short story ‘Eaux Troubles’ was adapted to media and she also had her novel Heal the Living made into a 2016 movie where one event brings the lives of a teenager, a team of doctors, and a woman with a heart condition together and interconnects them all.

This is is the story of a group of men and women somewhere in a made up California that are given the task of building a bridge. The book did very well, winning several awards and being translated into many different languages.

The Heart is the second novel to come out from this author. The 2014 novel also goes by the title of Mend the Living. The book has won several awards and was even adapted to be put on as a production on stage. It was produced in Avignon at the theater festival.

In The Heart, three teens go surfing before dawn in the morning. It’s a Sunday, and they’re driving home completely tired from their excursion. Then they’re involved in a car accident on a deserted road that turns fatal. While two of them are protected by wearing their seat belts, another goes through the windshield. His heart is still active while at the hospital, even while being declared brain dead by the doctors.
This story takes place in the hours that follow a heart transplant. Do not read this if you want to avoid spoilers, but life moves on from this one boy when the heart transplant helps a woman that will die without it.
