Mike Curato is a Filipino-American published author and an illustrator. He is well known for his series featuring the polka-dotted elephant known as Little Elliot.

Mike was born in New York City and grew up in its suburbs. He says that he has been drawing ever since the time that he was able to hold a pencil. He has attended Syracuse University, where he graduated with his BFA in illustration.

Once he was done with college, he decided that it was a good time to relocate to the city of Seattle. It was there that he started up his career as a graphic designer. He achieved his goal in 2012 of becoming a published author as well as an illustrator of children’s books. This is when Henry Holt Books for Young Readers offered the author a three book deal for three stories featuring his character of Little Elliot. The first book came out in 2014 and the rest is history.

Mike enjoys writing and reading, maybe as much as he loves ice cream and cupcakes. He is known for writing the Little Elliot series, which has earned a lot of critical acclaim, won awards, and has made its way into being translated into more than ten languages.

There are five books in this series. Mike has also illustrated books such as All the Way to Havana by Margarita Engle, What If… by Samantha Berger, Worm Loves Worm by J.J. Austrian, and has helped with the Eric Carle book What’s Your Favorite Color?. He has also worked on Sunny Day: A Celebration of the Sesame Street Theme Song.

He is also the author of his YA graphic novel, Flamer!. He has also worked on The Power of One by Trudy Ludwig. He has been the recipient of the Society of Illustrators Original Art Show Founder’s Award. He has also received many awards for Flamer, which included the 2021 Massachusetts Book Award for Young Adult, one of the Best Books of 2020 by NPR, and the 2020 Lambda Literary Award for LGBTQ Young Adult.

Flamer also has other distinctions, including being one of the most challenged as well as banned books in the United States. He has also become an advocate for promoting free speech. He continues to make books that focus on compassion, love, and friendship. His graphic novel Gaysians will be released in 2025.

Mike resides in Brooklyn, New York.
