Mike Newton is an American author of metaphysics, spirituality and nonfiction books. He also writes westerns under the pseudonym Lyle Brandt. A California native, he’s published more than 250 books both under his own name and pennames since 1977. He began his writing career as a ghost writer for Don Pendleton.
His first novel under his name was Monsters, Mystery and Man. It’s a survey for unexplained phenomena for young readers. Even though majority of the author’s published books have been political thrillers, psychological suspense, and westerns he is best known for his nonfiction books.

Smugglers’ Gold

Smugglers’ Gold is the debut novel in Gideon Rider series. The story begins five days after Abraham Lincoln is seriously injured by a bullet shot by an assassin when General Robert Lee surrenders. The confederate forces fail to accept the armistice and decide to go on with the war even after the union victory.

Americans are already fed up with the uncountable bloodshed over the years and are determined to reconstruct a country endangered to criminal activities and corruption. Gideon Ryder, a disrespected ex-deputy is given yet another chance to be an agent of a new secret service in the U.S. He is to investigate smuggling activities taking place in Galveston Island. To reach the Island, Gideon must pass through slaves, ex-rebels, and sailors for him to invade a group of fugitives who are more dangerous than he earlier thought.

The story is packed with many actions, especially during the fights between Gideon and the smugglers. Will Gideon succeed in the investigations and come out alive?

Rough Justice

Rough Justice is the second novel in Gideon Rider series. The book begins where Smugglers’ Gold ends when the war is already over. Though the civil war may appear to have ended, there are still some differences in the survivors as a number of them are again calling for equality. Some are ruthless vigilantes aiming to stop progress and development of Texas and kill the carpetbaggers and bluebellies.

Gideon Ryder is sent by the secret service to stop the knights from developing into an army. He follows a group of villains to Jefferson in Texas, and he finds the mission to be more difficult than he thought earlier. Some members of the gang cover their heads with sacks to hide their identity and for Ryder to identify them; he has to go near them to peep under the hoods. He works hand in hand with his army, and they are determined to bring the gang down with Henry on his right side and Colt on his left.

The storyline is well-drawn and flows nicely from one page and scene to the next. The characters are interesting and well developed, making the book charming to read. There is a lot of action, especially during the fights of the book’s main character and the gang. The author incorporates some post-war history that took place in Texas during reconstruction.

The Gun

The Gun is the debut novel in Matt Price series. The book is about Matt Brady, mostly known as a great gunfighter in the old west. Matt is challenged by another gunfighter to battle at the center of a dusty street, and he accepts the challenge. Matt has received a message from Belle, a girl who hey lastly met ten years ago. The last time they set eyes on each other was after Matt murdered two men who interfered with their privacy at the hotel where they had good moments. Belle was the lady he loved a decade ago and left him after she saw him gun down two men one night. The girl is looking for help, and Matt tries to figure out whether he can be of help to her. Due to the friendship the two had, Matt has to make a journey that may take several weeks riding on his horse before the challenge fight.

Matt begins a journey to her home, and he arrives, he finds that she has a surprise for him. Belle informs him that they have a son named Jesse, who he has never seen and knows nothing about it. The news ends up changing his life and those of the people around him.

The ill-tempered businessman attempting to take over the whole town has several gun slicks for him that’s why he challenged him for the fight. All Matt has to show is how to a gunfight on his horse, and he has no specific place to go. Matt is not only the fastest gunman alive, but he is also an intelligent and moral man and understands what lies ahead of him.

The story is fast-paced with vivid descriptions making the reader have a good picture in mind. The book is packed with many actions making the story more thrilling. The main character is likable, engaging, and is well developed, making the story more exciting.

Being Bridey

Being Bridey is the debut novel in Being series. The book is about a story of a character named Bridey Barnes, who is a 26-year architect. She is very desperate for love and afraid of the same. When she notices that a man is becoming too dangerous, she quits the relationship because she does not want to get married. Bridey thinks that if she gets married, she will not have a chance to experience her life better.

Bridey carries on with the same behavior until one day she meets Simon, an artist whose career is not doing well. He is twenty years older than Bridey and is in search for inspiration while Bridey on the hand is looking for something new. Bridey goes on a business trip in Berlin to represent her company where she learns her dominant side. When she returns to London, she becomes more close to Simon and changes her way of thinking.

The two establish a very close bond, but things turn out different than they expected to force them to evaluate their relationship once more. Things become more complicated when Toby, a young wealthy businessman, begins having an eye on Bridey.

Who will Bridey end up with and will she be able to change her view on commitment and marriage? Will she find someone to love for the rest of her life? The story is packed with many twists and turns that will keep you guessing as you flip pages. The author uses humor and romance, taking you on a journey of a young lady in search for love.
