Main character Margot Cartwright has moved to Glenville, South Carolina, but so far she’s not exactly finding it easy to blend in and become one of them. She relocated here from Washington, D.C., but it wasn’t really her idea. She feels completely out of place among the locals here, who all seem to look and act the same way. They wear Lululemon, they own tiny dogs, and they read lots of things– but not the New Yorker.
They also seem weirdly into the idea of having their fur children star on the reality television show Pawsh, which is all about couture canines. Margot cares about her dog, but she also thinks that Sid Vicious is just too cool a dog to go on that type of show.
She not only feels like an outcast here, but around her own family. When she gets caught channeling her own Robin Hood by taking the signs off of her neighbor’s lawns that are pro-Pawsh, it seems a certain way to cement the fact that she is the outcast of the town. It seems like things are just getting worse and in her opinion there is no way that things could get any worse. But of course, Margot is wrong.
But then the local dog walker gets himself killed in a situation that involves a huge Halloween display that has multiple skeletons from Home Depot. Everyone starts looking at Margot, who would physically back away from the accusations if she could. She has to clear up her name and rescue her family before it falls apart. Margot wants to track down the real killer and find them before they kill someone else, but this time she knows that she’s going to need some help if that’s what she wants to do.
That’s where Anne comes in. She’s a septuagenarian widow who wants to maintain her rule over the HOA. There is also Sally-Claire, who wears a sweatshirt that says Mom Life and belongs to the Mommy Mafia, and is a figure who may not have the perfect life that she portrays.
The three of them together form an unlikely trio and they are also kept company by their dogs. As they take on the mystery, they also move deeper into the unusual world of the residents of Glenville. They’re determined to find out who killed the dog walker, but it’s not always as easy as it looks.
Will the trio be able to figure out who did it and solve this case? Or is Margot about to find out that no matter what she does, her reputation is always going to be in tatters? Read Murder Bites from Mimi Montgomery to find out how the story ends!
