Miriam Grace Monfredo is a published American author.
She lives in western New York State, the same place that her Seneca Falls Historical Mystery Series is set. Miriam is not only a historian but also a former librarian. Her first novel was Seneca Falls Inheritance and was Agatha nominated for the Best First Mystery Novel 1992. The book is set on the backdrop of the first Women’s Rights Convention, which was held in 1848.
Ever since then, Monfredo has written more novels all dealing with the history of America as well as the evolution of women and minority rights. Her latest book to come out was Children of Cain, the third part of a Civil War trilogy that takes place in D.C. and Virginia throughout the Union’s 1862 Peninsula Campaign.
Her book the Brothers of Cain did well, receiving the 2001 Herodotus for the year’s Best Historical Mystery. She also received the 2000 Career Achievement Award for Historical Mystery Writing by the Romantic Times.
North Star Conspiracy, her second book, was picked for the statewide 2002 Alaska Reads a Book program and was picked by the Alaska Association of School Librarians for the 2002-2003 Battle of the Books motivational reading program. It was also picked for the 2005 Brookline Reads the Same Book in Massachusetts and for the 2005-2006 Central New York Reads Consortium.
Her fifth book The Stalking Horse was picked by the Voice of Youth Advocacy as one of the 1998 best adult mystery stories for young adults. She also received the 1996 Writing in Rochester Award from Writers & Books.
The short fiction that Monfredo has written has been featured in magazines and anthologies. This extends to two Best of the Year collections. Miriam is also the co-editor of 2 different historical mystery anthologies.
She also sometimes teaches writing workshops that take place at Writers & Books. She lives on Irondequoit Creek and shares her home with her dogs and cats. She also plays host to her gang of mallard ducks.
