Mordecai Richler was a published Canadian author, essayist, and screenwriter. He was born in Montreal in Quebec, Canada on January 27, 1931, and passed away July 3, 2001.

He is known for writing working-class Jewish background based stories, such as The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz or Saint Urbain’s Horseman. Some people may know him more for his 1997 work Barney’s Version. His book Solomon Gursky Was Here was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 1990.

Readers may also know him for his series of books for children, the Jacob Two-Two series. His father was a scrapyard dealer and when he was younger, he learned both Yiddish and English. He attended Baron Byng High School before graduating and then enrolling in Sir George Williams College, or what would go on to become Concordia University. He intended to study English but he would drop out before his degree could be completed.

Some time after that, his mother Leah Rosenburg would release her own autobiography. It was titled The Errand Runner: Memoirs of a Rabbi’s Daughter. It went into depth into the birth of Mordecai as well as his upbringing and also covered their relationship, which was sometimes difficult.

The author decided that he wanted to follow in the footsteps of so many literary exiles from the lost generation of the twenties in the United States and ended up moving to Paris when he was nineteen years old in 1950. He came back two years later to Montreal, where he worked for a short amount of time at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Richler then decided that it was time to move abroad once more and packed his bags and headed to London in 1954. While living in London, he was able to write and have seven of his ten novels published and got quite a bit of journalistic work done.

In 1954, he also married Catherine Boudreau, a French-Canadian woman who was nine years older than himself. On the eve of their wedding, he made the acquaintance of a young married woman named Florence Wood Mann, who he was very attracted to. Years later, they each got divorced and got married to each other. He adopted her son Daniel and they proceeded to have five children together. The events would be the inspiration behind his novel, Barney’s Version.

Worrying about being away from the ‘roots’ of his discontent for so long, he would eventually come back to Montreal in 1972. Once returned, he wrote quite a bit about the Jewish community in the area and even put his former neighborhood into several of his books.
