Like Wind Against Rock is the second fictional novel written by Nancy Kim. This is a book that goes into family secrets, regret, and all of the small decisions that we make that end up shaping our lives, changing them, and making us who we are at the end of the day.
When she is 39 years old, Alice Chang is surprised to find herself suddenly living in the last place that she would have ever thought to be, in her mother’s house. It’s not necessarily what she would choose for herself, but while dealing with such topics as divorce, eviction, and her father recently passing away, she doesn’t have any other options.
Left with no other choice, Alice is stuck precisely where she never pictured herself being. She’s also forced to watch as her mother takes on a new job and is thriving, and is even meeting younger men at the local gym.
At the same time, Alice is vastly struggling. She’s reflecting on a variety of things, such as her parents’ marriage, the relationship that she has with each of them, and getting used to being single for the first time in what has been nearly twenty years.
When she discovers an old journal that belonged to her father, Alice accidentally ends up unearthing a shocking family secret that may end up having her questioning just about everything that she knew, from regret to love to family and more.
Can she make use of everything that she is reflecting on and find a way to make her own path forward? Or will Alice find that this is more than just a temporary setback and that it is a rut instead that she’s going to have to get out of? Alice is going to have to contend with the man that her father was over who she perceived him to be, as well as who she wants to be and what it is that is going to get there. Read this book to absorb every word for yourself and see how this story ends!
