Neil Denby is a published author known for his fictional Quintus Roman series of novels.
Even though he has published academic texts, those days are since gone. They are still there on his profile, though. He has served as a principal moderator for a major examining board, as well as been a senior lecturer at Huddersfield University.
Neil has since taken a different direction and decided to try something new penning novels. The result was his Quintus Roman series, which kicked off with the publication of Legionary in 2023. Decanus, the second book, came out later that year. They were followed by the third book, Optio, and the fourth book, Centurion. He is grateful to all of the readers and thanks them for writing positive reviews detailing their experience!
His books have also been translated into audiobook form and Neil says that Matthew Lloyd Davies does a ‘brilliant’ job narrating.
Neil has retired from the academic life and now prefers to live a quiet life. When he is not busy writing, he loves spending time with his grandchildren when they visit. He resides in a village in West Yorkshire. There he splits his time between volunteering and writing when he has a spare moment.

This is the first book in a series of adventurous tales that are all set in the time period of ancient Rome.
The time is the year 17 B.C. Main character Julius Quintus Quirinius has something in common with the many citizens that have found themselves in a certain position in the years that followed the civil wars of Rome.
Julius has to either volunteer as part of the Roman army or face the choice of being sold off into slavery. He really wants to prove his worth, and joins the Ixth Legion as a member. However, after about six months his group suffers a horrible defeat that is partially due to cowardice and stupidity.
The thing is that cowardice comes with the punishment of decimation. This sentence means that at the whim of the gods you can live or die, and the ones who are less likely end up being clubbed to the very death by the same soldiers that they served besides in battle.
The man in Quintus’s group who was killed goes by the name Ursus. He puts a charge on the youth, asking him if he will do him the final favor of looking after the men who remain and to do his best to care for Ursus’s family in Rome.
Julius Quintus Quirinius wants to do what he can to help carry out the final wishes of Ursus. He helps to lead his group south so that they can take on the tribesmen who are hiding out in the mountains and to defeat them. It is his hope that the reputation of the Ixth legion will then be restored at last.
If they are able to win this fight, they might just find out that the prize that they hoped that they would get is totally out of reach. Now it seems that the goal of getting back to Rome may be as well. Can Julius figure out how to come out on top or is that just not something that is possible? Find out by reading this historical adventure that is positively packed with action!
Decanus is the second book in the Quintus Roman series by Neil Denby. If you like historical fiction series, or read the first book in the series and really enjoyed it, be sure to check this one out!
The main character Julius Quintus Quirinius is back, and now he’s going on another adventure. This time, Ancient Rome is about to find out what happens when it meets up with Ancient Britannia.
Julius is on his way to Britannia, a strange land. He is accompanied by his group mates. They are going on a mission to take a look at the savage country, serving as scouts. They are also going to go to battle with the tribesmen there so that they can make way for the emperor.
Before the group is able to land, a storm breaks up their ships. This separates Quintus, who has recently been made Decantus, from some of the group. While he goes out looking for them, he runs into a group of Britons that may end up being either enemies or friends.
Quintus also feels betrayed when he finds out that the legionaries that have gone missing have been taken by a local tribe. The tribesmen are not yet ready to let the Romans go alive. This means that they are going to have to attempt a rescue mission if they want to get them back.
Will he be able to use the training that he and the other soldiers have received to get them back? Quintus has taken an oath that will lead him to take on rescuing his men if he can. Is he about to find out that the very first foreign mission he is going on is about to be the last? Read this action packed adventure book to find out!
