Nelson Algren was an American published author. He was born in 1909 and passed away in 1981.
The author was born to his Swedish immigrant parents and moved when he was very young from the city of Detroit to Chicago with his family. He would then attend Illinois University, studying journalism there.
He had many different experiences as a migrant worker during the Depression, something that would give him material for Somebody in Boots, his 1935 debut novel.
Throughout the course of his life, the author always identified with the American underdog. From 1936 to 1940, he was the editor of the Illinois Writers’ Project. He finished up his second novel in 1942 and then joined the war as an enlisted man. His book Never Come Morning came out to great acclaim and would go on to sell over a million copies.
Algren has a style of dark naturalism that is able to record the details of urban existence with flashes of melancholy poetry. His characters have been junkies, whores, barflies and lowlife drifters from poverty row. He is able to record the bravado of their colloquial language and puts their predicament out there.
A Walk on the Wild Side is a 1956 book by Nelson Algren. If you have been on the lookout for a classic work that is not too long but is also very enjoyable, check out this book and see what you think!
This story depicts such unique characters of Perdido Street such as hustlers, bootleggers, and prostitutes that takes place in the old French Quarter of New Orleans in the 1930s. This book has found a solid place in the imaginations of many generations ever since it first made its appearance on the scene.
The author admitted the book was not written ‘until long after it had been walked’, saying that he found his own way to the streets on the ‘other side of the Southern Pacific station’, and the jukes were singing something called ‘Walking the Wild Side of Life’. Algren noted that ever since he had pretty much stayed on that side of the curb.
The words of the author could describe this work very well, which basically in summary say that it asks why lost people can sometimes become greater human beings than the people who have ‘never been lost in their whole lives’ and why some who have suffered from other men are the most ‘natural believers in humanity’. If you want a unique read that will also be enriching, check out A Walk on the Wild Side.
The Devil’s Stocking is a 1983 book by Nelson Algren. Take a look at one of the last works from this artist and see what you think.
This is the tale of main character Ruby Calhoun. She is a boxer that has been accused of murder and opens up a world full of cops, con artists, bar girls, low-purse fighters, and more.
This story follows along with a battle for truth and human dignity which develops into a bigger story about decisions of life and death, this is the author’s final novel and a wonderful conclusion to his literary career.
