Nidhi Chanani is a published author of fiction.
She was born in Calcutta, growing up in southern California in the suburbs. She has a passion for creating and makes things because she feels happy and hopes that others will be happy from what she makes too.
She attended the University of California at Santa Cruz, graduating with her literature degree. After that, she attempted to make her own career in the nonprofit sector. However, she kept having the desire to draw that kept taking her away from that. So in 2008, Nidhi decided that she would sign up for art school. However, she did drop out a year into it.
In 2009, she would come up with one illustration for each day of the week and complete it. She gave it the name of Every Day Love and with three years practicing every day, found that she had made good progress on developing her style of narrative and her voice. So began a career in art and in business.
Today she is a successful cartoonist, freelance illustrator, and a writer. She was given the honor of being named a Champion of Change in April 2012 by the Obama administration. She has since made appearances in the media, showing up on shows such as Anderson Cooper 360 on CNN and appearing for BBC Radio. She has had her work featured in a variety of places, including My Modern Met, the India Times, Bored Panda, The Women’s March, and Huffington Post.
Chanani has also collaborated with Disney, State Farm Insurance, Microsoft, Sony, Airbnb, and more. She has also written nonfiction comics that have been featured in the Nib. On top of that, products in her Everyday Love Art are sold all over the United States in retail shops, including the Therapy stores, Books Inc., and the San Francisco International Airport.
Nidhi is married to her husband, Nick Giordano. They have a daughter together. They live in the San Francisco Bay Area along with their cat, who always wants attention. She makes it a point to dream and to draw every day. Nidhi enjoys making illustrations that capture everyday moments of love. She also enjoys collaborating with her husband on other projects together. She also teaches in the comics and MFA program at California College of Arts.
The author’s first graphic novel came out in the autumn of 2017 from First Second Books. It is titled Pashmina. The graphic novel was a hit and received great reviews from Publisher’s Weekly, the New York Times, and the School Library Journal. Netflix has announced that it plans to adapt the book into an original animated musical. Writer and director Gurinder Chadha has been attached to direct. Other people attached to the project include Ashok Amrirtraj, a producer, and Paul Mayeda Berges, a writer.
Pashmina is a graphic novel from Nidhi Chanani. This is a fantasy story full of adventure that tells the story of main character Priyanka. She is an American, first-generation, with Indian descent. She goes through and explores the history of her family thanks to assistance from a magical pashmina. It has been named one of the top twenty children’s books of the year by Amazon and a selection from the Junior Library Guild, among other honors.
Priyanka has many questions regarding her family. She wants to know why her mother left India and abandoned her home all those years ago. She wants to know what it was like. She also wants to know who her father is and why her mother left him. However, anything on India is avoided by her mother and so all of these questions are dodged.
Priyanka finds that the homeland that her mother grew up in only lives in her imagination. Left without answers, she’s left to envision it all herself. But when she discovers a pashmina that has been forgotten in a suitcase, things change. When she puts it around her, Pri finds that she goes to a place that is colorful and seems real.
However, is it even the real India or an illusion? She also wants to know why there’s a shadow in the background. To find out what’s really going on, this girl must go farther than she has ever thought she would and hopes to find a family that she has never known. Will Pri be able to find more out about her family? Check out this graphic novel for yourself and follow her journey!
