Hekate- The Witch is the first book in the Goddesses of the Underworld series by Nikita Gill. It was up for a Goodreads Choice Award in 2025 for Reader’s Favorite Young Adult Fantasy & Sci-Fi.
This is the retelling of the life of Hekate, a Greek goddess and a child of war who has become a goddess who is all powerful at witchcraft and necromancy. If you love a good fantasy story that draws from the myths of old, you are in the right place.
Godling Hekate was born into a world that was on fire and as a result has never been able to know what it is like to be safe. Her parents are on the losing side of the war between the Titans that rule everything and the new Olympian Gods. Hekate gets taken by her mother Asteria to go to the Underworld, and there Styx and Hades agree that they will raise her.
At the same time that all of this is going on, Asteria is fleeing across the world and being pursued by Zeus and Poseidon. In order to get away from them, she changes herself into an island that exists alone in a stormy sea. Hekate is orphaned and on her own as a result.
She grows up there in all the beautiful and horrible things of the Underworld. She is very desperate to find a sense of divine purpose as well as a sense that she belongs in the world of the dead. When she at last gets her powers and becomes a goddess, she realizes that the most powerful Olympians there are all scared of her. But what can she do about it?
Then an immortal war breaks out again, which could put everything at risk. Mount Olympus and the Underworld are threatened. Meanwhile, the Goddess of witchcraft and necromancy might just be the only one among all of them who is able to bring this conflict to a conclusion. Will she be able to do it or will she find that it is too much? Anything is possible in this engaging story!
Grab a copy for yourself and check out this book that plunges the reader into a ‘vivid and imaginatively wrought divine world’ (author Jennifer Saint). Inside, Gill captures the ‘beauty, brutality and otherworldly strangeness of the ancient world like no other writer’ (bestselling author Elodie Harper).
Styx- The River is the second book in the Goddesses of the Underworld series by Nikita Gill. If you read along with all of the adventures in the first book and want to go into this world once more, check out this book that starts a generation before Hekate and tells the story of the underworld river goddess that sees over the river that has her name.
Styx was the first born child of the Titans and is revered by the others for being the first of her kind. But it was only a matter of time before someone else came along and stole the spotlight from her. She gets eclipsed when her scores of siblings come along. Once the Oceanids and the Potamoi arrive, she is quickly forgotten.
Styx is coming of age in a world that is full of paranoia and full of an unspoken fear of Kronos, the volatile god-king who goes unchecked. Early on Styx learns that she needs to hide the rage that is started up by her increasing disillusionment with her parents and her siblings, who she finds vain and unkind.
She does end up finding sisterhood and solace in Asteria, her cousin. Together they work to train in the arts of creation and magic. As they look for their divine purpose and their place inside of the Titanomachy, they find the joy that is sparked by true love as well as the resilience that so often comes from motherhood.
In this story of love, identity, sisterhood, war and more, Styx is going to have to set out and make her own way when it comes to being a woman and then later a god. How will she do and can she forge this path, or will it be more difficult than she thinks? Read the second book in Nikita Gill’s fantasy series to find out!
