Early and Personal Life
Paul Magrs was born in Jarrow, Tyne & Wear, in 1969. At age six, his family moved to Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, where his parents later separated. A difficult experience at 17, involving a homophobic attack reported by his estranged father, marked a turning point in his youth.
Growing up, Magrs attended Woodham Comprehensive School, where he shared a drama group with future writer Mark Gatiss. He later studied at Lancaster University, earning top honors in English and completing a PhD focused on author Angela Carter. His academic background in literature and creative writing helped shape his future as a storyteller.
These early experiences, both personal and educational, played a role in Magrs’ development as an author. His love for storytelling grew from a mix of real-life influences and literary study. Today, his work reflects the creativity and resilience that defined his journey.
Writing Career
Paul Magrs began his writing career with the short story “Patient Iris” in 1995, followed by his debut novel, Marked for Life, that same year. His early works, including Does It Show? (1997) and Could It Be Magic? (1998), featured recurring characters and a magical realist style set in a fictional version of his hometown. These novels established his talent for blending everyday life with imaginative storytelling.
In 2002, Magrs ventured into children’s literature with Strange Boy, a semi-autobiographical book that sparked debate due to its depiction of a young queer protagonist. While some critics objected to its content, libraries and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups defended its place in schools. Magrs stood by the story’s authenticity, calling the backlash unnecessary, and continued writing across genres with more stories still to come.
Doctor Who: Sick Building
Doctor Who: Sick Building by Paul Magrs was published on November 20, 2007, by BBC Books as part of the Doctor Who: New Series Adventures line. It was the seventeenth novel in this officially licensed series, expanding the Tenth Doctor’s adventures. The book remains available in print and digital formats for fans of the franchise.
On the frozen planet Tiermann’s World, where savage beasts roam, the Doctor arrives to warn Professor Tiermann and his family of approaching danger. They live in a high-tech Dreamhome protected by a force shield, but this won’t stop the Voracious Craw; a massive, hungry alien creature heading straight for them.
As the shield fails and their automated home turns against them, escape becomes increasingly difficult. With time running out, the Doctor must help them flee before everything is destroyed.
Readers looking for thrilling sci-fi adventure will enjoy this fast-paced story. The creative setting of a high-tech home under threat makes for exciting tension. Fans of survival scenarios and alien dangers will find plenty to love. With clever twists and high stakes, it delivers an entertaining escape into another world.

Bonding over books, he and his grandmother discover the unusual Great Big Book Exchange shop. There, they meet free-spirited Kelly and her eccentric boss Terrance, forming unexpected connections. These new friendships soon lead to surprising and unsettling developments for everyone involved.
Anyone who enjoys heartfelt stories about grief, books, and unlikely friendships will find this novel deeply engaging.
