Many might think that the western genre is long gone, but with Peter Brandvold’s novels, he keeps them alive. The western genre still has a place in America because of its long and colorful history as well as the freedom it gives both the readers and the writer. Peter Brandvold likes action and the western gives him limitless opportunities to explore that field and continually find fertile ground for good stories.

Western fiction is definitely here to stay. If you are a reader of western stories, then you should never forget about Peter Brandvold. He is an American fiction author with several published novels under his belt. Peter Brandvold was born in North Dakota. He now lives in western Minnesota with his dog.

Today, he has over seventy westerns with fast-paced, fast-action plots under his name as well as his pen name, Frank Leslie. He is famous for writing .45-Calibre books that feature Cuno Massey, Lou Prophet, and the Yakima Henry novels.

Recently, he published his first young-adult western featuring Lonnie Gentry as well as its successor, the Curse of Skull Canyon. He first published his books with Five Star. He has also published books with Mean Pete Publisher, the publisher of fast-paced western ebooks.

Peter Brandvold has also written twenty-nine entries in the long-running series, Longarm. This is published with Berkley Books. He has also written four books for the Trailsman series published with Signet. Other than that, he has also written two “Ralph Compton” novels. These are Navarro and Bullet Creek. Currently, there are now film scripts being developed about his novels in Hollywood.

The western genre may have not been read or watched about as much since the height of its popularity over fifty years ago. Now, local novelist Peter Branvold is bringing it back, keeping the mythical time of the western genre in America alive.

Peter Brandvold is a very prolific writer, he has written over a hundred novels since the 1990s. Pen name, Frank Leslie, was derived from a real outlaw from the Old West. He said that Frank Leslie was a very bad man. But maybe it is just as fitting for this western writer to use the name of a real outlaw as a pen name.

Peter Brandvold said that setting the novel in the western gives him lesser restrictions on what his characters can do compared to contemporary fiction that is set in the present world. There is a responsibility to be a bit more realistic in the modern world which can be both restricting and boring. With the western, it is a mythical time and place where anything can happen. However, with the long history of western genre, it would be a challenge in making the stories fresh and new. But it seems like this is not much of a difficulty for Peter Brandvold.

In spite of what most people may think, there is still a demand for the westerns. People still crave for it. Another surprising factor is on the wide scope that Peter Brandvold has with his audience. There are those who have been reading westerns for a long time and continually to do so now, while there are those who have just begun reading the genre and have come to love it. Not only are the readers men, the fan base comprise of a lot of women as well. That shows you the talent of Peter Brandvold when it comes to storytelling and that the western genre is not just for men.

These days, Peter Brandvold’s novels have reached a global scale. Some of his books have translations into other languages such as Italian. Some may even be translated into Norwegian. That’s how far his fan base reaches. For many countries, they share the same feeling when it comes to western, its mysteries and magic. It is an exotic place that has long been gone but continues to be alive through fiction.

Having lived in Colorado over the past few years, for Peter Brandvold, being back is a relief. He grew up in a lot of different places including North Dakota towns. He then ended up studying in Grand Forks and graduated at the Red River High School. While Peter Brandvold was growing up, his family often went on vacations to the lakes of Otter Tail County. His father also owned a small farm in Erhard. He said that he has always loved the area. This is probably where he got plenty of his inspiration for his novels as well.

Peter Brandvold is one who didn’t have to look for passion in his life. It seems like he was born with it. He said that he has always loved to write. It is fortunate that writing came easy for him. His storytelling came out naturally also. He first started storytelling with his school friends and reading out stories for his classmates. His imagination was wild as the wild, Wild West even at an early age.

He earned his English degree at the University of North Dakota. After that, Peter Brandvold moved around a bit and studied in Arizona. Next to that, he taught in an Indian reservation in Montana. After his teaching stint at the reservation, he went back to the Midwest and taught at the M state in the 90s.

Peter Brandvold and his wife renovated a farm that sits between Underwood and Battle Lake. They lived there for several years and that where his writing career finally took off. He said that there, it is peaceful and quiet. There are oak trees, hills, lakes, and a lot of fishing. He loved to fish.

There will be a new novel coming out entitled “Once More into the Breach” that will come out later this month. It is part of The Sherriff Ben Stillman series where it follows the protagonist of one of his earliest novels. Readers will sure be thrilled at the thought that the western continues to live on through the novels of Peter Brandvold.

Amazon’s version of Yakima Henry’s “Chiricahua Blues” (Book 15 of the series) ends abruptly in Chapter 21 with the KID reloading his Spencer rifle running between boulders while fighting Apaches. Downloading, again, did not help. How does it end??? Help please.
