Peter J Charles is a British crime and intelligence fiction author based in Winchester, England. Born in 1953, he began his working life in the Royal Air Force before joining Surrey Police in 1983. He later served as a detective, spending nine years on the Drug Squad and working across surveillance, criminal intelligence, and informant handling. Those years shaped his understanding of how investigations actually unfold: the pressure, the compromises, and the small decisions that change the direction of a case. His fiction draws on that experience, blending grounded policing with the shifting demands of modern intelligence work. He writes with a restrained tone, clean prose, and a focus on character and operational credibility.

His series follows Detective Constable Tom Kessler, a methodical investigator whose career takes him from frontline policing into the shadows of covert intelligence and an ‘off-the-books’ team he builds around him. The books move from local drug investigations to political pressure, foreign interference, and the quiet conflicts that sit behind public events. Each story is built on authentic tradecraft, ensemble dynamics, and the human cost of working in environments where mistakes carry real consequences.

A Hidden Enemy moves Tom and his off-the-books MI5 unit into the intelligence world proper, tasked with stopping Russian penetration of a British missile programme with international implications. Turning an insider is only the beginning. The operation becomes more dangerous when GRU Colonel Viktor Karpin arrives to drive the mission forward. After a violent attack leaves the team exposed and grieving, Tom and his colleagues are forced into a deception plan with almost no margin for error. One misjudged move could trigger a wider crisis, and the team must navigate shifting alliances, compromised assets, and the political fallout waiting behind every decision.

A Shared Danger sends Tom and Martina under cover into Iran on a deniable, American-funded operation: deliver the money, stay invisible, get out. When the job is torn apart, they are left on the run across a hostile country with a teenage stowaway they never planned for, hunted by an IRGC colonel who does not give up. There is no backup and no extraction, and every mile to the Gulf is paid for in cash, nerve, and the courage of ordinary Iranians who risk everything to help strangers. It is the operation that changes both of them, and it makes them an enemy they have not seen the last of.

A Reluctant Asset brings the hunter to London. Promoted and posted to the Iranian Embassy under diplomatic cover, Reza Farhadi, the officer who chased Tom and Martina across Iran, becomes the target of the team’s most delicate operation yet: turn him. Set against the real events of late 2011, as sanctions bite and the British Embassy in Tehran is stormed, the operation crosses lines even this team has never crossed, and a single name, spoken on an open line, lands in the middle of them like a grenade. When Farhadi’s world begins to collapse, they must decide what they owe a man who once hunted them, and what it will cost to bring him out.

The series blends British policing, intelligence, geopolitical manoeuvring, and character-driven tension, offering readers a grounded look at the worlds of crime and espionage.
