Robert Crumb or R. Crumb is a published American artist, musician, and illustrator known for his comics.
R. Crumb was born in Philadelphia on August 30, 1943. He is recognized for being the author and illustrator of various comic works. He also has been one of the pioneers of underground comics. His books include The Complete Crumb Comics (17 volumes), Kafka, The R. Crumb Sketchbook (10 volumes), R. Crumb Draws the Blues, The Book of Genesis Illustrated by R. Crumb, and more.
Robert Crumb resides in the south of France with his wife, Aline Kominsky-Crumb, an artist.
He is renowned for the distinctive style of his drawings as well as his view of the American mainstream, which ranged from subversive to satirical and critical. Crumb was a founder of the underground comics movement, in some ways regarded as its most prominent figure.
He is one of the most celebrated of comic book artists, however, his entire career has unfolded outside the mainstream comic book publishing industry. One of his most recognized works is the comic “Keep On Truckin’”, which became a widely distributed fixture of pop culture in the seventies. He is also known for the characters ‘Fritz the cat’, ‘Devil Girl’, and ‘Mr. Natural’.
R. Crumb was inducted into the comic book industry’s Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1991.
The Book of Genesis Illustrated by R. Crumb is one of the key books of Robert Crumb’s catalog. The legendary illustrator has now envisioned the first book of the Bible like no other has done, bringing the reader the story of Genesis in an honest and moving way.
Now readers of every generation, age, and walk of life will be able to have the chance to get new insights from these stories that are older than us! Crumb’s ‘Book of Genesis’ reintroduces the reader to the bountiful tree-lined garden that Adam and Eve were in, the gigantic ark of Noah that contained beasts of every type, the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah that were destroyed by brimstone and fire, and the Egypt of the Pharaoh.
R. Crumb uses clues from the text to peel away the theological and scholarly interpretations that have often obscured the Bible’s most dramatic stories and is able to flesh out a variety of biblical originals. From the serpent in Eden, appearing like an alien out of a science fiction story, to Jacob, a kind of depressed guy that doesn’t strike the reader as physically courageous, to his brother Esau and to God himself, who is described as a standard Charlton Heston-like figure with long white hair and a flowing beard.
Crumb’s book of Genesis is all the more impressive because it is the result of the culmination of five years’ worth of painstaking work. It’s a tapestry of master detail and storytelling that is a clear evidence of the diversity and the ability of one of the great artistic geniuses of the United States.
R. Crumb’s Heroes of Jazz, Blues, and Country is a 2006 book by Robert Crumb. Any person who is familiar with R. Crumb’s work as an illustrator knows of his passion for music. Those who collect his work prize the “Heroes of the Blues, Early Jazz Greats” and “Pioneers of Country Music” trading card sets that he created in the early to mid-1980s.
Now they come packaged together for the first time in book form, along with an exclusive 21-track CD of music that was selected and compiled by Crumb himself. It features original recordings by Charley Patton, “Dock” Boggs, “Jelly Roll” Morton, and others.
Inside a biography of each musician is provided, along with a full color original illustration by the cartoonist. A characteristically idiosyncratic tribute by an underground icon to the musical innovators who helped to inspired him over the years, this is a collection that is a must have whether you are an R. Crumb fan, a comics fan, or a music lover!
