Robert F. Burgess is a published American author who lives in north Florida.
He grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. As a young boy he often would trout fish the same creeks and streams that Ernest Hemingway did. At the end of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army 88th Blue Devil Division Ski Troops in northern Italy.
After the war, he came back to Europe on the GI Bill to study foreign languages at universities in Italy and Switzerland. He would complete his education in journalism at Michigan State University.
Robert would become a Florida magazine writer and photographer who specialized in sport fishing and scuba diving adventures. Later he would go back to Europe with his wife, having gotten married, to travel and write for different magazines there and abroad.
Robert F. Burgess has been called a Renaissance man in the past because his books cover a wide spectrum of time and events. He is able to write real life adventures that include sharks and shipwrecks, as well as cave diving, treasure diving, underwater archaeology, meeting Hemingway in Pamplona, and short e-book stories about Marine snipers during the Vietnam War.
The beauty of this author’s writing style is that no matter what adventure a reader has in their hands, it puts them into whatever he is describing so that they become part of the adventure too.
Ghost Sniper is the first book in the series by the same name by Robert F. Burgess. Read this book if you have been looking for an interesting Vietnam book to read that is also fictional.
In Vietnamese the word ‘ma’ means ‘ghost’. It’s the name that the enemy also chose to give their most dangerous and deadliest sniper– not to mention their most elusive– that they had working for them.
The sniper had an incredibly high number of kills during the Vietnam War when it was active. His trademark was his elusiveness, how he could appear or disappear so discreetly. He came by night or day, would target the unwary, make his kills, and then would disappear.
His domain would be any rugged terrain that gave him cover, with fast-running streams winding through jungle growth so thick you had to crawl to get through it. The man known as Ma moved through this country like a shadow, never leaving any sign of his presence. The Ghost came, killed, and vanished. No ever saw him, and no one even found the slightest indication of where he had been.
All anyone knew about him was that when he had a target, he never missed, and he always vanished as though he had never been there. The VLC had named him well. The American military sent squads out searching for him, and they themselves often ended up numbers in the assassin’s game. How he was able to wipe out an entire squad, no ever found out.
When patrols returned, all they could report was finding possible places that might give a sniper his superior range of fire. But even there, they found nothing more than a depression in the grass or a trail of vegetation leading to a stream that a wild animal might have made.
To our troops, Ma the Ghost Sniper became a legend that no one wanted on their case. They knew him because he never failed to make several kills in several days. Then he vanished. The military thought that they finally might have more qualified competition for this sniper. He was an older veteran, a Green Beret, a Marine sniper who was very skilled named Harry London.
Sergeant Landon was given just one assignment– to live alone in the jungle on continual special duty. There he honed himself, and hunted the Ghost. Landon had lived in the jungle so long that it was a part of him, and he knew all of the tricks.
The troops knew him by reputation and also that he was good because he had survived. He had taken out snipers before. But now the Charlie Company were up against a shooter with all of the cunning and evasive tactics of the Ghost. Before Ma could take out any more of them, they put out a plea for help.
But this story quickly becomes interactive, meaning that the reader plans an important role in this drama. Before the story is over the reader becomes Harry Landon the sniper and determine what is going to happen due to your decision. Read this unique book to learn and maybe even decide what happens!
Return of the Ghost Sniper is the second book in the Ghost Sniper series by Robert F. Burgess.
Ma the ghost sniper is still out in the world, making kills and leaving his mark on them. But he is always invisible and no one seems to know where he fires from. Once again, Sergeant Harry Landon is ordered to do the seemingly impossible– to take out the sniper whose ghostly habits enable him to perform the impossible, killing victims wherever he chooses in plain sight but no one sees him.
Harry soon realizes that the Ghost is taking him and leading him into a dark alien world only inhabited by the dead where he may lay waiting to strike. Is he mortal or immortal? The only way Sergeant Landon will find out is to choose to take a deep breath and go there after him. Read this book to find out what happens and whether you can kill a ghost.
