Robyn Green is an accomplished published author.
She was born in Suffolk, England, where she grew up. Robyn has always had a passion for the arts and this passion has served to be the main source of inspiration for her when it comes to her writing. Green’s first novel was titled The Dramatic Life of Jonah Penrose and in many ways is a love letter to the theatre from the author.
Robyn was very young when she fell in love with theatre and with writing. She would spend some time performing on the stage before deciding that it was time to focus her efforts behind the scenes and began to specialize in costume design and curation.
She began writing when she was very young and continued studying English literature and creative writing at sixth form. From there, Robyn specialized in costume design and script writing. She maintains her passion for books and the theatre to this day and usually can be discovered either with her head in a book or watching some type of musical with a cup of tea close by.
The Dramatic Life of Jonah Penrose is the debut novel from author Robyn Green. This 2025 book is in the queer romance genre so be aware that this story features LGBTQIA+ characters and themes. Heated Rivalry comes up against the West End theater world of London in a romance where rival co-stars enter into a fake dating publicity stunt that may result in the type of romantic sparks that neither of them were anticipating.
Main character Jonah Penrose is seeing his star on the rise. He was able to win his first Olivier Award thanks to his performance in The Wooden Horse, the top musical in the West End at the moment. He’s always been talented, but now the rest of the world is finally getting to see what he always knew.
Jonah is doing so well and it feels really great. However, professional success is often no magical fix for other things that are going on in life. He’s gone through a breakup recently, is doing what he can to manage his own sense of self-doubt, and trying to care for his father who is not doing so well.
Starring in The Wooden Horse was a career high, but it doesn’t make up for everything else that is going wrong. Jonah has no idea what is going to come next, but the last thing that he was expecting was to have to tangle with a new rival.
Dexter is the golden boy of the West End and has joined The Wooden Horse as the latest cast member. Right from the get-go, Jonah finds that he and the new actor have a lot of friction. To Jonah, Dexter is arrogant and nearly intolerable in every way. But is his dislike of the new cast member due to actual dislike or is there something more behind it driving his feelings?
The more that Jonah takes a look at him, the more he dislikes him, but he’s starting to doubt his own feelings. He dislikes how everything about Dexter is just so perfect. He’s very handsome and offers up casual but also cutting notes on how Jonah has performed. He also likes to wear these fancy sweaters that Jonah just knows end up costing more than his entire monthly rent.
Dexter was originally going to be Jonah’s enemy in the show, which seemed like a perfect way for them to exist opposite each other. But now everything has suddenly been switched around last-minute. Dexter is going to play Jonah’s love interest thanks to the appearance of a round of illness that has taken out half of their cast.
Jonah is dismayed by this last-minute change and isn’t comfortable with it at all. But as they say, the show must go on. He just wants to stay away from Dexter as much as he can, but there is no avoiding each other when it comes to the stage. Unfortunately, the tension between them ends up having an unexpected result.
Dexter and Jonah playing against each other on stage ends up enthralling the audience. Fans take the tension between them for romantic chemistry and can see and feel the sparks flying. Word soon gets around and the tickets begin selling quickly. Everyone wants to see the hottest play of the year starring the hottest couple on the West End.
Suddenly it seems like everyone in London is clamoring to try and get tickets to this show. The fans are so invested in the chemistry between these two actors that the shows start quickly selling out. Demand is so high that the producer of the show encourages the co-stars to put on their own show– convincing everyone that they are linked in real life.
The producer thinks that a faux-romance could be beneficial for Dexter and Jonah, but the actors have their doubts. This would not be the first time that two actors faked a romance in order to boost their own careers, but the show is doing so well that it seems a little bit like overkill. Plus, the entertainers are convinced that they definitely don’t like each other– right?
The more time that Jonah and Dexter spend together, the more that they find out that there might be something more there. Something more than the hate and the dislike and the competition. As they pretend to be interested in each other, will they be shocked when the fake passion actually turns real?
What will they do next and can the two actors put aside their dislike of each other and embrace the fact that they actually have so much between them that could be good? Sometimes you just have to throw out the script for your life and improvise what you want to happen. Find out what goes down between Dexter and Jonah by getting your hands on a copy of Robyn Green’s The Dramatic Life of Jonah Penrose, a fun romance that you won’t want to miss.
