The Drayton Legacy is the first book in the Potters saga by Rona Randall. This book first came out for readers to enjoy in 1985 and is one of those classic historical romances that you love to see!
Set in the eighteenth century, main character Joseph Drayton is in a pickle. He doesn’t want to let his sister get married, and on top of that, he intends to get rid of her suitor and to make him hit the road. The only problem with his little plan is he has no idea the amount of chaos he is stirring up for the future.
Jessica has a lover, and she has become pregnant by him. Now she is in a sore spot of trouble, and the predicament that she has found herself in is about to have deep consequences in this small Staffordshire village of Burslem, where everyone in the community is very close.
Joseph Drayton is the Master Potter, a man who runs the family business with an efficiency that comes from a mind that is intent on keeping the business going and providing for them now and into the future to come. He may wear velvet and lace, but his private ambition to do well is not to be impeded on by anyone.
These could extend to the gypsy girl Meg, who works hard in his turning sheds. They definitely do not extend to Martin, his younger brother who is quite gifted. Martin has to work in the pot bank run by Joseph for five years thanks to his indentured bond. He does it as part of the agreement, but he is always distracted by creative imaginings about how he will be able to express himself through his art in a more real and personal way when he inherits his Drayton legacy.
Simon Kendall is his friend, a canal digger who also happens to be a genius. He may not be able to write or read, but he has a keen mind and the intellect of an engineer and an architect. His vision may be able to take the pottery trade and turn it into something else entirely– something better.
