The Drayton Legacy is the first book in the Potters saga by Rona Randall. This book first came out for readers to enjoy in 1985 and is one of those classic historical romances that you love to see!

Set in the eighteenth century, main character Joseph Drayton is in a pickle. He doesn’t want to let his sister get married, and on top of that, he intends to get rid of her suitor and to make him hit the road. The only problem with his little plan is he has no idea the amount of chaos he is stirring up for the future.

Jessica has a lover, and she has become pregnant by him. Now she is in a sore spot of trouble, and the predicament that she has found herself in is about to have deep consequences in this small Staffordshire village of Burslem, where everyone in the community is very close.

Joseph Drayton is the Master Potter, a man who runs the family business with an efficiency that comes from a mind that is intent on keeping the business going and providing for them now and into the future to come. He may wear velvet and lace, but his private ambition to do well is not to be impeded on by anyone.

These could extend to the gypsy girl Meg, who works hard in his turning sheds. They definitely do not extend to Martin, his younger brother who is quite gifted. Martin has to work in the pot bank run by Joseph for five years thanks to his indentured bond. He does it as part of the agreement, but he is always distracted by creative imaginings about how he will be able to express himself through his art in a more real and personal way when he inherits his Drayton legacy.

Simon Kendall is his friend, a canal digger who also happens to be a genius. He may not be able to write or read, but he has a keen mind and the intellect of an engineer and an architect. His vision may be able to take the pottery trade and turn it into something else entirely– something better.

If you love historical romances that also happen to feel like a real story that was happening at the time, you cannot get any better than The Drayton Legacy! First in Rona Randall’s Potters Saga, this is an interesting book with great characters and random humorous moments that showcases some of the very best classic romance writing of the eighties.

Time may have passed, but the potteries remain. Joseph Drayton has since passed away and Martin has taken his place as the Master Potter, proving some of his ambitions had a chance of coming true. The man known as Max Freeman is thought to be dead. Olivia is his daughter, one he never knew, and is fighting her own battle against not only prejudice but her mother’s ambitions. Phoebe is pretty, and her selfish nature knows no bounds.

Olivia has decided to leave her claim to the Tremain estates. Instead, she chooses to join up with Drayton Pottery. Her family is shocked by the move, as she will become a laborer on the low end of then scale at the firm run by her uncle.

Olivia is excited to start at the bottom and to work her way up from humble beginnings. While she is busy doing so, the Freemans have come together with the Draytons by way of marriage, and are furiously scheming.

Joseph’s widow Agatha is hoping that she can get the Tremain inheritance so that she can give it to Lionel, her son. Lionel wants to know why they found his father’s body in an outhouse naked. Phoebe is conning her mother in law and caught between being at the security of her home and her new lover’s charms.
