S.C. Perkins is a cozy mystery author from Houston Texas that is best known for her debut novel “Murder Once Removed.” The fifth-generation Texan grew up hearing eating a lot about Tex Mex and listening to fantastic stories about her ancestors, which she has said has been the inspiration for her first novel. The novel that was first published in 2019 won the Best First Traditional Mystery Prize by Malice Domestic. She has asserted that she always loved family histories which is why she loves her day job as a genealogist and takes great pride in assisting her many clients to trace their ancestries. While Perkins is overall a good friend and honest as can be, she can also be very stubborn especially when it comes to her writing hobby. Still, she tries her best to avoid interfering with investigations and do the right thing for both her clients and sometimes the authorities. She currently lives in Houston and when she is not tracing people’s genealogies, she can be found writing her novels, riding horses, or sunbathing at the beach.

Perkins first got interested in genealogy as a child where she had a family that had people in the genealogy career going back years to her paternal great-grandfather. Growing up and hearing fascinating stories of her ancestors told, she began to create a picture of her protagonist as a professional genealogist. Thinking about it, she has said that the research on a person’s history typically has aspects of mystery which can sometimes evolve into a spine-chilling murder mystery. Perkins thought that it would be fun for her lead character to try to solve some of the mysteries and while at it try to make some impact in the present using the past. Moreover, she is a history geek and as such, she knows a lot of history which she believed would come in handy in her mysteries. Another thing working in her favor was that she is curious and fascinated with aspects of ancestry. With her knowledge of forensic genealogy and DNA testing, things can often get pretty dark and technical. However, this creates the conditions necessary for some interesting and dark psychological thrillers. Nonetheless, since she prefers to write cozies, she is content keeping it humorous and fun while not venturing too far from the lighter end of things. Still, she does write in some interesting aspects that are involved in the research of a person’s ancestry.

Lucy the lead protagonist of “Murder Once Removed” first popped into SC Perkins’ head when she was in Austin attending a writers’ conference. She was listening to a panel about how to write characters with interesting joy jobs. It was at this moment that Perkins thought that a professional genealogist would make for a very interesting protagonist. Her fascination with genealogy and the fact that several of her family were involved in the field also helped provide some important insights. That afternoon, she went up to her hotel room and penned the first page of her debut novel and several pages of notes. She immediately saw a picture of her protagonist from her personality, the way she looked, and her name. In one afternoon, she had built up her genealogist turned amateur sleuth though she believes the character had always been in her heart for years. Perkins set her novel in the town of Austin Texas where she has lived for most of her adult life. The story happens very close to the fascinating taqueria and Lucy works in a historic building modeled after another historic one that is a few meters away from the capitol of the state of Texas. Lucy also has amazing friends and lives in a trendy part of town where there is no shortage of things to do. Moreover, for a love of history, the huge number of museums and research facilities make it the perfect location.

“Murder Once Removed” by SC Perkins is a fascinating mystery that is the first of the “Ancestry Detective” series of novels. Lucy Lancaster the Texas genealogist makes use of her skills to try to resolve a series of present and past murders. There is nothing that can distract Lucy from her task of tracking down her targets except for an invitation to a good taco. She is the best at finding long-dead progenies. But then her job becomes even more interesting when she finds a journal and daguerreotype picture with evidence that the great-great-grandfather of billionaire Gus Halloran of Austin had been the victim of a brutal murder 150 years ago. Lucy is also interested in telling Gus about the man that was responsible for the death of his ancestor. Using clues from a journal she hunts around and finally has a shortlist of two Texans from the nineteenth century, one of which was the progeny of Daniel Applewhite a current senator. But when Gus decides to out the man as being the descendant of killer Lucy finds herself in a difficult place with an enemy prepared to kill and more dangerous and twisted than she ever expected.

SC Perkins “Lineage Most Lethal” opens to Lucy Lancaster the preeminent Austin genealogist getting a job. She has been engaged by a woman in her early twenties named Pippa Sutton who wants her to help trace the history of her family. After losing her grandfather and father, she was interested in bringing the family closer together since she needed their help in keeping the successful hotel business founded by their ancestor going. Lucy does the work but when she goes to Pippa’s home to present to the family members something goes awry. It gets even more complicated when a stranger that wanted to give the investigator something dies mysteriously. Things only get worse when Lucy informs her grandfather about the incident and he disappears with the object. Lucy needs to find out what is happening in the Sutton family and now believes her grandfather has some secrets especially regarding his role in World War II. It is a great story with a wonderful setting and a complex family story, a strange hotel manager, a chief that is hiding something, and a family with several branches. It seems connections are everywhere and Lucy needs to figure out how it is all connected.
