Sally Smith is a published author.
She spent all of her working life as a barrister. She would later serve as King’s Counsel in the Inner Temple. She wrote a biography of Sir Edward Marshall Hall KC, the famous Edwardian barrister. After that, she retired from the bar so that she could pursue writing on a full-time basis.
The result of Smith turning to writing full time was her first novel, A Case of Mice and Murder. The novel was inspired by her own life witnessing the historic surroundings of the Inner Temple where she lives and works. She also was inspired by the history of the Inner Temple Archives and Library. The debut would be the first book in a series that featured the main character of Sir Gabriel Ward KC, a reluctant amateur sleuth.
A Case of Mice and Murder is the first novel in The Trials of Gabriel Ward series by Sally Smith. This is the debut of the series and a fun romp for anyone who loves a good light-hearted mystery series. Smith sets this series in the ‘hidden heart’ of the legal world of London, and along the way invites readers to go on an adventure with an unlikely sleuth as he tackles a mystery.
Barrister Gabriel Ward comes out of his room at two minutes to seven in 1901 on a sunny morning in May, and when he does he finds that his mind is so full regarding his thoughts on the current case that he hardly notices anything. The latest case has to do with the authorship of a bestselling children’s book Millie the Temple Church Mouse that is being put into dispute.
He is so caught up with things that he is barely able to register the body that is lying at his doorstep, one that happens to belong to the Lord Chief Justice of England. Despite his preoccupation he is able to take notice and see the dusty bare feet of the judge, something that stands out compared to the immaculate evening dress that he is wearing and the fancy silver carving knife that is coming out of his chest.
Murder has been confined to the casebooks in the courtyards and the old buildings of the Inner Temple, the heart of the legal world in London. But things are slowly starting to change. The police are only able to go into the Temple by consent. So they’re going to need someone else who can look into things. That of course leads them straight to one man.
The best person to look into this would be someone who cares about law and order and would be concerned about its breach. However, murder doesn’t really react to logic or a reasoned argument. Gabriel is about to find out that the heavy oak doors of the Temple are hiding far more than the secrets he imagined, and has far juicier ones to divulge. Would others kill in order to keep them contained? Read the first book in The Trials of Gabriel Ward series to find out!
A Case of Life and Limb is the second novel in The Trials of Gabriel Ward series by Sally Smith. If you read the first book in the series then be sure to catch up with all the goings-on of the second by getting your hands on a copy of this sequel.
The year is 1901. Gabriel Ward is working hard on a complicated libel case, one that involves the most famous music hall star in London and also one of its more notorious tabloid newspapers. Despite everything that is going on, the Inner Temple is as calm and quiet as it has ever been. Everything seems to be very calm until things get shaken up a little bit when a mummified hand comes through in the post.
The recipient of the hand is Temple Treasurer Sir William Waring, and he is fairly shaken up. This is a strange event, but Gabriel is not filled with repulsion but curiosity. He wants to know who it is that would send something like this as well as why. More parcels start to come, and one has fatal consequences. Gabriel starts to realize that Sir William may not have been the target but instead the target was the actual Temple.
There is someone out there with a grudge, and them holding onto it has led to one death at least by this time. It’s up to Gabriel and Constable Wright from the City of London Police to tackle this case. With some diligent work, they may be able to discover who is responsible before the killer strikes again and nip this thing in the bud once and for all.
Can they figure out who is doing this or are the two about to become the next targets instead? The game is on and they’re about to either win or lose. Gabriel and Constable Wright are in a race against time and the payment for being too late could be their lives. Grab a copy of Sally Smith’s A Case of Life and Limb, the second in this fun series, to find out what happens!
