The time is the 15th century and the place is Oakham in Somerset. The setting is a small village that has been cut off by a large river and there is no bridge. Then a man somehow falls into the river or gets in there somehow and he is carelessly swept away by the river.

All of this takes place in the early hours of the morning of Shrove Saturday. Everyone around is confused and wants to find out what happened. They don’t readily have an explanation. They want to find out whether it’s suicide, accident, or murder. Was it simply a way for this man to remove himself from life? Did he mean to go into the river? Or did someone make sure that he got in?

There is a chance to figure out what happened. John Reve is the village priest, and as a result he usually has a lot of access to secrets and information since he serves as a confessor. But it remains to be seen whether he’ll be able to get to the bottom of what happened to the victim.

The victim in question is a man named Thomas Newman, and he wasn’t just any old fellow. He just happened to be the most industrious and capable man in the village, as well as the wealthiest. It’s up to the people of the town and especially Reve to figure out what happened to this man. He wonders what will end up happening if he is unable to complete this task as the village’s de facto detective.

Working things back in time and moving to the moment that Thomas Newman passed away, the story is relayed to the reader through Reve. He is not only an extraordinary creation of God, but the leader of his flock of followers and a man who has his own secrets. The story is told through his own personal point of view and his voice. Through these tools, he is able to come up with a medieval world that is completely believable and the host for this unique story.
