Samuel Shellaburger was an American novelist. Born in 1888, he passed away in 1954.
Samuel Shellaburger also wrote using other pen names. He was also known by the name John Esteven and Peter Loring.
Samuel Shellaburger was an author of scholarly works and best-selling historical novels. He was also an American educator.
Born on May 18, 1888 in Washington D.C., both of his parents sadly passed away while he was a baby. This is why he was brought up by his grandfather, also named Samuel Shellaburger. He was a noted lawyer who served in Congress during the American Civil War and has served as a Minister to Portugal.
His travels with his grandfather later proved to provide a gold mine of material for his books. The author attended many private schools and then was admitted to Princeton University. He would later teach there.
After being in Germany for a year studying at Munich University, Shellaburger picked up his studies at Harvard and Yale once more. He took a year off to serve in the first world war, and despite this received his doctorate in 1917.
The author married his wife in 1915, having met her the year previous vacationing in Sweden. They had four children together but two of the boys unfortunately died, one as a baby and the other while serving in the second World War. He would die of a heart attack on March 21, 1954 in Princeton, New Jersey.
Samuel Shellaburger had also published some scholarly works and didn’t want to undermine them and their credibility by publishing fiction, so he used pen names for his early mystery and romance stories. John Esteven and then later Peter Loring would claim the credit for these works.
Samuel kept writing scholarly works and teaching, but his historical fiction stories became so popular that he started using his real name of them. Many of the books were best sellers and were adapted into movies.
