Sarah Maria Griffin

Sarah Maria Griffin is a writer from Ireland who brings fantasy and horror stories to life for young adult readers. Alongside her novels, she writes poetry, hosts podcasts, and creates her own zines, showing just how many different ways she likes to tell stories. Her creative energy flows through all these projects, giving her a unique voice in modern Irish literature. Readers everywhere have come to appreciate the fresh perspective she brings to every page.

The characters Griffin dreams up feel like people you might actually know, with all their hopes and fears right there on the page. She has a real gift for writing protagonists who are easy to cheer for, even when they find themselves in the middle of strange and spooky situations. Getting to know her characters is half the fun of picking up one of her books. They stay with you long after the story ends.

There is also something special about the way Griffin builds her narratives, keeping readers curious about what might happen next. Her stories move along at a nice clip, balancing exciting moments with quieter ones that let you catch your breath. Whether she is writing about magic or monsters, there is always a strong thread pulling you through to the end. It is simply enjoyable to spend time in the worlds she creates.

Her work also has a way of feeling both familiar and new at the same time. She takes elements that readers might recognize from fantasy and horror and looks at them from a different angle. The themes she explores come through in a voice that feels fresh and distinctly her own. It keeps readers on their toes without ever feeling forced or complicated.

Looking ahead, there is plenty more to look forward to from this Irish writer. Griffin continues to create new work across novels, poetry, and other creative projects, so readers have much to anticipate. Her voice in young adult fantasy and horror keeps growing, and it is always exciting to wonder what world she might build next. The best part is knowing she is still just getting started, with many more stories waiting to be told.

Early and Personal Life

Sarah Maria Griffin was born in late January of 1988 and grew up in two neighborhoods on the north side of Dublin, Kilbarrack and Raheny. She went to secondary school at Manor House School in Raheny before heading to college. Her studies took her to Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology for a degree in English, Media and Cultural Studies, and later to NUI Galway for a Masters in Creative Writing.

Like many writers, she likely spent plenty of time getting lost in books as a young person, letting stories spark her imagination along the way. Those early years of reading and learning gave her the tools to start crafting her own tales. Her time in school helped shape her understanding of language and storytelling, setting the stage for the work she would go on to do.

In 2012 she made a big move to San Francisco, living there for a few years before returning to Ireland in 2015. Coming back home, she started writing full-time and has not stopped since. She is now married to Ceri Bevan, and the life she has built continues to feed into the creative work she shares with readers.

Writing Career

Sarah Maria Griffin’s writing career began with poetry and short prose, publishing her first collection Follies in 2011. She followed this with Not Lost in 2013, an essay collection about leaving home. Her early work showed a writer finding her voice across different forms before moving into young adult fiction.

Her first young adult novel Spare and Found Parts arrived in 2016, followed by Other Words for Smoke in 2019. She also wrote a special novel called The Book of Wisdom for festival subscribers that same year. Her next novel Eat The Ones You Love was released in 2025, with more work still ahead.

Spare and Found Parts

Sarah Maria Griffin’s young adult novel Spare and Found Parts was published on October 4, 2016. The book came out through Greenwillow Books, which is an imprint of HarperCollins. This release marked her debut in the young adult fiction space.

In a city recovering from a terrible epidemic, most survivors use biomechanical limbs created by a famous scientist. Nell is the scientist’s daughter, but she is different from everyone else because her mechanical parts are inside her, including her heart. She struggles to find her own purpose while living in her father’s shadow as her community rebuilds. Everything changes when she discovers a mannequin’s hand on the beach and begins to build something of her own, uncovering secrets about her city and her father along the way.

This is a compelling story that keeps readers turning pages from start to finish. The main character is easy to root for as she searches for her own path in a fascinating world. The mix of science and mystery adds an enjoyable layer to the narrative. Readers will find themselves curious to see where Nell’s journey takes her next.

Eat the Ones You Love

Sarah Maria Griffin’s horror fantasy novel Eat the Ones You Love is scheduled for release on April 22, 2025. The book will be published by Tor Books, marking a new chapter in the author’s career. This release continues her work in speculative fiction for readers.

Shell Pine is going through a rough patch after leaving her fiancé, then losing her job, and, finally, moving back in with her parents. While at her local shopping center, she spots a help wanted sign in a flower shop window and decides to take a chance. She quickly discovers that working with flowers brings her joy, and she also feels a connection to Neve, the beautiful florist who runs the shop. What Shell does not realize is that something dangerous is hiding in the mall, a creature named Baby who watches Neve closely and hungers for her in ways she cannot imagine.

It’s a novel that offers a fresh and unexpected twist that keeps readers curious throughout. The characters feel real and easy to connect with, making their journeys all the more engaging. There is a nice balance between everyday moments and something much stranger hiding beneath the surface. Readers looking for something different will find plenty to enjoy here.
