Seth Insua is an Anglo-Spanish author, writer, and artist.

Born in 1989 in Kent, he attended the University of Oxford where he graduated with a First in English Language and Literature. He would then work at creative agencies in London, later moving north for the purposes of becoming a freelance creative.

In addition to writing books, he is the force behind many comics, some so popular that they have been serialized in magazines. He has been shortlisted for awards such as the Bridport Prize and the Short Story Competition in The London Magazine. Seth was also a semi-finalist in the BlueCat Screenplay Competition.

His debut novel is Human, Animal and it came out from VERVE Books. Seth is also the author of Queerphoria, which is part of the VERVE Voices series.

The author is married and lives with his husband David between Newcastle upon Tyne and Madrid.

Human, Animal is a 2025 book by Seth Insua. This is a book that has been enjoyed by people such as Russell T. Davies, who says that the book ‘moved me to tears’. It was shortlisted for the New Adult Book Prize 2025 and the Discover Award at the 2026 British Book Awards.

This is a story about the attempt of one family to find some type of connection in a world that is changing quickly and a story about self-discovery and hoping to find common ground. George Calvert is a dairy farmer who is trying to maintain the family business and keep it from going under.

George is concerned about the future but also is resistant to change. He doesn’t want to face the tough realities that he is dealing with, such as the farm failing, his older mother’s health getting worse, and the tough relationship he has with Tom, his youngest son.

Tom has come back from university and isolates himself in his bedroom from childhood while doing his best to guard the truth of his new identity. He gets into a conflict with his father one day when animal rights activists decide to break into the cowshed one morning, and it looks like Tom is on the protesters’ side.

When the family starts to come apart, a secret that has been kept for decades comes to the surface. It could be one that tears them apart at last or unites them in a way that they never thought that they would be. GQ calls this a ‘clever debut with an opening line you’ll be thinking about for months’. Follow along with every word by getting a copy of Seth Insua’s debut today!

Queerphoria: An Own Voices anthology celebrating queer joy is the first book in the VERVE Voices series featuring the writing of Seth Insua and several other authors. It also supports Switchboard, the national LGBTQIA+ support line. Written by queer authors, this book donates a portion to Switchboard for every copy that is sold. Buy a copy and some for your friends and know that you are helping out a good cause while experiencing a one of a kind work.

A variety of essays, poetry, prose, illustrations and more fill this book as 21 talented writers contribute their visions of euphoria and bring them to life. Inside of these pages are pictures of what joy can look like, even in times that are less than certain.

An older widow makes her way to her first ever queer bar in one story, while in another, four housemates invite the reader into their home to celebrate a birthday party. A couple celebrating their anniversary take a shipwrecked sailor into their lighthouse on a late night. A single woman gets into a romantic entanglement with a sex robot, and a married couple get ready for their baby to come into a world where procreating is overseen by the Establishment.

These and more can be expected in this completely unique project that has a charitable impact for every copy sold. This is a book that DIVA says is full of ‘brilliant new work by dozens of vital voices’ and comments that the ‘overarching theme of queer joy feels particularly needed right now’.

This is a view on the world through a fictional but also realistic lens as creatives express queerphoria in a variety of ways. Switchboard has been supporting the queer community for over fifty years through its challenges and its triumphs, offering a regular ear in difficult times and joyful times too. The support is free and available through phone, chat, or email, and their services operate from ten in the morning to ten at night for every day out of the year, staffed by trained volunteers who are willing to talk with individuals at any point in their journey.

Whether you are an active part of the community or an active ally, this is a great and truly expressive book with a good cause in mind. Now you can experience all that these creative artists have to say on the subject by getting a copy of your own and feel good because you are also helping by giving back. Seth Insua is in good company in this thoughtful and important work. Check out Queerphoria for a unique debut to this anthology with a purpose that ought not to be missed!
