Sharon McMahon is an accomplished American educator, author, and podcaster.

She started out teaching government and law in public schools in the Washington, D.C. suburbs. After teaching for years, she starting publishing politics-oriented content to her Instagram in 2020, something she did in response to what she viewed as rising misinformation in her social media feeds in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic and 2020 election cycle.

Sharon decided to launch a giving campaign for the first time that launched in December of 2020. Her goal was to raise a thousand dollars that went towards a family in need. Instead of that, she was able to crowdfund over $125,000. In January of 2021, she received quite a bit of attention for her work organizing a campaign writing letters to thank U.S. Capitol custodians who had cleaned up after the insurrection that took place on January 6th.

In July of 2021, the author started hosting a podcast called Here’s Where It Gets Interesting. There are four hundred episodes in this podcast and they are a combination of interviews done with notable Americans and narrations shedding some light on American history and civics. It covers all types of topics from the Prohibition to World War II to democracy principles and the functions and the structure of the U.S. government. They have had such guests on the podcasts as Rainn Wilson, George Takei, Heather Cox Richardson, Ken Burns, and more.

She was also recognized by PRWeek as Communicator of the Year and was nominated Best Social Creator at the 2022 Webby Awards. The podcast also won a 2023 Webby Award for Best Writing and People’s Voice.

Sharon is a founding partner of the organization Starts With Us, a group that attempts to overcome division and polarization. She has also launched the workshop series Government for Grownups, a series that is all about United States history and government.

She has lead philanthropic initiatives that have raised millions of dollars for medical debt relief, disaster recovery, classroom grants, and international crises, and says that her goal is to inspire different audiences with a message of hope that we can create change with small actions that are consistent.

Sharon relates how with equal parts of gravitas and levity, she has been able to attract a community of millions of followers who are referred to as the Governerds. Her first book was the Small and Mighty and it went to number one on Amazon. It has also been celebrated as a best book of the year by Barnes & Noble, Goodreads, and Amazon.
