Backstage Murder by Shelley Freydont is a fitting introduction to the Linda Haggerty series of novels. The lead is Linda Haggerty, who has been convinced to come back from retirement to help rescue a troubled dance show. However, Linda did not know how much gone the show was until the backstage threats, demands, and tantrums became a two-person dance instead of a scandalous death. When Carlotta Devine, who is a diva well past her prime, is found murdered in her dressing room, it is not a surprise to anyone. Carlotta was every stage manager’s director and dancer’s worst nightmare. While her troupe is raving about her last dramatic gesture, Lindy has to deal with a theater full of suspects with their own very justifiable motives. However, the closer she gets to the truth, the more she thinks the murder was just a dress rehearsal for something even more horrific. A deranged killer is planning a final curtain call, and Lindy will be front and center in the events. It is a work that showcases the workings of the world of dance from the perspective of a popular dance troupe and as such it comes with some very fascinating backstage details to go with an intriguing mystery.
Shelley Freydont’s High Seas Murder is the thrilling second novel of the Linda Haggerty series. Linda Haggerty works for the Jeremy Ash Dance Company as a rehearsal director who is going on a ten-day Caribbean cruise on the Maestro luxury yacht. On the boat is a diverse array of performers, from cabaret artists to ballet dancers and opera singers looking to entertain their wealthy clientele in the upcoming festivities for the New Year. Shortly after leaving the port, things turn dark when one of the vilest music critics is found dead in bizarre circumstances. Grayson was known for his scathing reviews, which had made him one of the most reviled figures in the industry. Amidst the performances and rehearsals, Linda teams up with Biddy McFee the company’s business manager to look into the critic’s death. As Lindy dives into the intricacies of the case, she finds long-standing grudges and hidden motives even as she strives to ensure her dance company successfully does its performances on the high seas. Combining elements of the performing arts and suspense, it is an engaging mystery set in the ornate settings of a luxury yacht.
Midsummer Murder is a fitting addition to the Lindy Haggerty series of novels. In this outing, Linda has accepted an invitation to teach at a prestigious summer program to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Easton Arts Retreat. It is going to be at one of the most opulent mansions in upstate New York. But what was supposed to be an opportunity to give young dancers some inspiration becomes a dangerous investigation when a mentally troubled student on a scholarship is found dead at the bottom of a cliff. Initial fact points to an accident, but the local sheriff intends to use it to destroy the reputation of the retreat for his own ends. Digging deeper, Lindy unearthed some dangerous rivalries, hidden betrayals, and dark secrets among the students and staff. When another student goes missing and a staged suicide very nearly causes the death of another student, Lindy knows that the killer is still out there. With a list of suspects such as a wealthy student with a troubled past, a strict counselor and an archeologist, Lindy is working against time to unravel the mystery before the killer takes her out too. She must use every instinct and couple it with determination to expose the killer while avoiding getting taken out by the murderer.
