Shelly Ellis is an American published author. It is also a pen name used by Shelly Stratton.

She is a women’s fiction and romance author and is the creator of such series as the Gibbons Gold Digger, the Chesterton, and the Three Mrs. Greys series. Her fiction career first started when she became one of four finalists at nineteen years old in the BET Books First-Time Writers Contest. The prize for the contest was having her first romance short story published in the book ‘All That and Then Some’, an anthology.

Shelly has been nominated for a NAACP Image Award and was a finalist for the 2015 Image Award in the Literary Fiction Category. She has written several novels since the debut of The Right Maneuver, her first novel, in 2011. She has also written several short stories too, using different pen names on occasion. She has been a finalist for the African American Literary Award on three different occasions in the romance category and was also a finalist for the 2015 RT Reviewers’ Choice Award in the Multicultural Romance category. She was also picked as one of iBooks Rising Stars in romance in 2015.

Shelly has always wanted to be a writer for as long as she can remember. She studied journalism in college and began as a crime reporter for a small local newspaper. Today she works as an editor at a trade journal in Virginia.

Shelly has been writing for a long time and has always been told by teachers and family that she has a lot of talent. Winning the anthology series contest was when she could finally believe that she could be a writer. She has always had good luck using the direct submissions process and did not have a literary agent for a long time, although now she does.

Shelly says that she got the idea for the Gibbons Gold Diggers series from the sister dynamic of a tight knit family like her mother had and likes books that have complex characters. Her advice to those who would like to write is to develop your skills as a writer.

She herself had an intensive writing program that she went through in college and got used to critiques, but she also reads writing blogs and has taken grammar courses. She also recommends taking courses at community colleges or joining organizations such as the Romance Writers of America. Shelly advises potential writers to be prepared for rejection and to not give up.

The author is married. She has a daughter that she shares with her husband and they live in Prince George’s County, Maryland. When she’s not busy writing, she loves to read, paint, or watch movies.
