Sonya Bateman is an American published author. She also goes by the pen names of Leon Andrews, S.N. Bateman, and S.W. Vaughn.
She lives in upstate New York, where she says there are just two seasons, winter and construction. She is married and resides with her husband as well as their son, their three cats, and a gerbil that has half of a tail. She likes swimming and reading, and only wishes that there were some way that she could combine the two.
She is an award-winning copywriter as well as novelist. She also happens to be a fantasy movie enthusiast (as long as the films are from the mid-eighties to the late nineties), a hoarder of coffee, and a cool rock collector. She says that she spent a good part of her childhood climbing up trees so that she could peacefully have a place to read her books.
Sonya grew up in central New York, a place where ‘not the city’ is part of everyone’s address. She has been writing professionally for over a decade and continues to put out work that readers love. She lives in a large house with her family in a little city and loves to write psychological fiction that is not only shocking but full of twists. It may end up leaving you suspicious of your friends and neighbors, and keeping the lights on at night to sleep, but that’s okay!
Sonya has contributed to the Gavyn Donatti series and the DeathSpeaker Codex series. She is the author of the Aftermagic series, the Avalon Rising series, and the Gripping Psychological Crime Thrillers series. She has also written several standalone novels.
The Cursing Stones is the first book in the Avalon Rising series of novels by Sonya Bateman. If you’ve been searching for a wholly original fantasy, then you are in the right place!
They say that home is where the heart is, but sometimes, home is really just where the monsters are. Main character Rhiannon Finlay also goes by Rain, and she knows one thing for certain: she is just awful at being a druid.
She has a gift of communicating with animals, and that’s been functioning perfectly. But on the other hand of things, she isn’t able to tell apart a Wunjo from a Thurisaz rune. She isn’t even able to manage casting a circle of protection without having some sort of cheat sheet on her.
All of this is precisely why she decided to leave her small village located on the Isle of Parthas in the North Sea behind. She wanted to seek out a non-magical life that was completely normal for her, even if it meant going partly around the world in order to find it.
What she didn’t count on was her grandfather going missing. Rain’s close to her grandfather, but he isn’t the only one who has gone missing. A group of villagers have also gone. She has a choice in the matter, but she doesn’t really, because of course she is going to go out there and try to help the ones that she loves.
Rain has every intention of using her gift and even her druid magic if that’s what is going to save them. But she’s not really ready to take on the threats that are coming her way from every angle. There are monsters that are showing up all over the place, from black dogs to banshees to mutant spiders and even much worse than that, if that can be believed.
Things start to make a little bit more sense when she finds out that all of the strange stories that her father told her when she was little and growing up may not have been insane. He would tell her about places like the old deserted castle on the island belonging to King Arthur and stories like that. But maybe they made more sense than she originally thought.
It turns out that the legends just might be real, and on top of that, they’re coming back to Parthas. But more than that, it looks like when it comes to Rain Finlay, they might just have some unfinished business on their hands. Can she make it through all of this madness in one piece, and manage to get her grandfather and the others back? Read this book to find out!
The Risen Bones is the second book in the Avalon Rising series of novels by Sonya Bateman. If you liked the first book in this series, be sure to keep all of the action and the adventure going by checking out this fantasy sequel!
You know what they say, you should be careful what you wish for. Rhiannon Finlay goes by Rain for short, and when she came back to the Isle of Parthas and returned home nearly a month ago, she didn’t have any expectation that she would be actively fighting with monsters.
But yet, that is what appears to have passed. She has taken on a variety of beasts and come out on the other side victorious. She has fought a giant spider, a faerie dog, and more. Along the way, she has managed to even sharpen up her druid skills and get better at communicating with animals.
She’s slightly bored without having something around to fight. But when a villager loses their head and the attacker is not human, it appears that she might have something to fight after all. Just when Rain thought everything was over, it appears that the monsters are coming back with a vengeance. Worse, they all appear to be bigger than they have been before.
Rain’s also having trouble with other things. The strange ghost who ended up saving her life now feels that it needs her to get out of his prison. Then there’s her father who’s dating new people, a co-worker who gets more antagonistic daily, and a talking bird that’s dreaming about her dying.
All of the secrets that have been kept from her are also coming up to the surface and messing with the people that she cares about. One is coming back from the dead to get vengeance for an old grudge against Rain that she’s about to find out exists. What will she do and how will she handle it? Read this second in the series from Sonya Bateman to find out!
