The Greers were able to make their fortune solely on alligator bones. Dartrine Beaumont thinks that the sudden death of her mother has left her all alone in the world and is devastated. But then she finds out that she has some long lost wealthy relatives who reside in Florida, which means that she is not entirely on her own.
Dartrine is a little confused on how she has this extended family but is very happy about the situation. She decides to make her way to the Gilded Age mansion owned by her grandmother on Amelia Island in order to find answers. She gets there just in time to put her claim on an inheritance that is fairly unusual but very lucrative– an empire based on alligator farming.
Her arrival to Greer House is far from all that she hoped it would be. Dart doesn’t have any warning but suddenly discovers that she is involved in a big competition with the heir apparent of her grandmother, who is arrogant and unlikable. Tensions continue to go up as threats on one of the farms continue to grow.
Even more unsettling is the fact that her hostile grandmother has the deep seated belief that the danger is coming from a curse. Legend has it that an alligator that has been larger than life has been hunted down by a bloodthirsty ancestor, something that haunts the family.
Even Dart is unable to deny the fact that the alligators on the farm are only hissing at the Greers or that there appears to be a strange figure in the shadows that makes its way through the halls of the mansion. As Dart works to get to the bottom of the truth when it comes to her birthright, she ends up dealing with a horrible choice.
She can either accept the place that she has in the legacy of her family or go on a new path through slaying an entirely different beast. What will she do in the end? Readers can find out by getting their hands on a copy of The House Built on Alligator Bones by Sophia Huneycutt to discover what happens in the exciting conclusion of this msytery.
