A Marriage at Sea: A True Story of Love, Obsession, and Shipwreck is a debut book from Sophie Elmhirst. It is a book that Patrick Radden Keefe calls a ‘beautiful meditation’ on things such as ‘endurance, co-dependence, and the power of love’ and concludes that it is ‘dazzling’.
This is the incredible true story of a young couple who find themselves shipwrecked in an incredible story of survival, obsession, and partnership that has been taken to its very limit.
To be sure, Maurice and Maralyn have always paired up to make an odd couple. He is an awkward man, a longer who is obsessive. She is ambitious and charismatic. But together, they share the horror and fear of wasting their lives. They also dream as we all do of running away and just getting away from it all.
What would happen if they quit their jobs, sold their house, and ended up buying a boat and sailing away into the sunset? So many of us end up thinking something like this, but most of us just end it at the daydream. But Maurice was determined to follow the dream and started studying nautical navigation. Meanwhile, Maralyn compiled a careful list of all the provisions that they would need.
At last, in June 1972, they set sail. Everything was going well for a year, but then after that in the Pacific, they ran into trouble. Disaster hit them when a breaching whale ended up putting a hole into their boat and it ended up sinking down beneath the surface.
What ends up happening is a fight to try and make it in the ocean out in the wild. With not much hope of being rescued, Maurice and Maralyn are suddenly in the battle of their lives just to stay alive. They are alone together for months in a small rubber raft, without food, starving, and completely exhausted. Now the couple not only have to try and stay alive but find out ways to get along with each other, as demons come from within and their marriage is ultimately put to the test.
Even though they could eventually run away from the world, the couple is also finding out that they are not able to run away from themselves. Especially in this situation, it is up to them to find a way to survive as long as they can and hope that ultimately they will be rescued.
Dazzling and taut, this novel puts together an adventure on the high seas along with a challenging love story that dives into the question of why we love difficult people as well as who we are ultimately tempted to become when we find ourselves faced with extreme conditions. Read this book to absorb every detail of this story!
Exposed: The Ashley Madison Hack is an audiobook written by Sophie Elmhirst. If you were around at the time, you may vaguely remember the Ashley Madison scandal. In 2015, the website and many personal lives of its clients fell apart as a result of user information being hacked and then published globally. This is the story of what happened with that scandal!
In the early years of the 2000s, millions of people ended up signing up for Ashley Madison. The popular website catered to people who were in relationships or married but wanted to actively cheat on their partners. Of course, all of this cheating would be going on while still being kept a secret.
Ashley Madison lured users in with the promise of being discreet while also promising to deliver the affair that so many were desperately looking for. It facilitated these desires by allowing users to sign up and then message and chat with other users, all while maintaining their public relationships and being able to secretly go after what they wanted.
All of this was shattered apart in the summer of 2015. This is when hackers took the cache of user information from the company and decided to release it, publishing it so that everyone around the world could see. The end result was one of the most intense data breaches to ever happen in the age of the Internet.
Overnight, millions of people who had used the site were shocked to see their personal information released online. It was not only their real names but their physical addresses and their sexual preferences, released online in a database that was searchable that anyone could look through. Everyone from regular people to millionaires to celebrities in high-profile relationships were affected. If you were on the site, your information was suddenly out there.
Told through the various stories of those who were affected by the hack as well as experts, this is the story of the real life hack of Ashley Madison. It is a true story as well as a cautionary tale for others who find that their secrets live in the cloud and what ends up happening when trust is lost in the real world and online. Read this book to find out what ended up happening and discover all new details about this event!
