A Deadly Fortune is the first book in the Amelia Matthew Mysteries series by Stacie Murphy. If you love a good historical mystery, then you will want to check out this story where a young lady in the Gilded Age of New York has to use her talent to get to the bottom of a conspiracy.
Amelia has attempted to do what is nearly impossible, at least what should be for an orphan during these times. She may be an orphan, but she also has company in the form of Jonas, her foster brother. With his help she has been able to use her natural psychic talent to put herself into a life that is comfortable and safe.
However, all of the safety and comfort that she has worked to build for herself go away when she gets a head injury. That means that her gift is not gone but instead expanded on. She now has a larger than life gift that leads her to channeling an angry spirit in public that gets her locked up in the Blackwell’s Island insane asylum.
Jonas is aware of the situation and is doing everything that he can to find a way to set her free. At the same time, Amelia is doing her best to try and keep her powers under control as best she can while also doing her best to make it through in a horrible place where it is difficult to keep your sanity.
The character of Andrew Cavanaugh in this story is someone who is also familiar with the concept of despair. He has gone through a horrible loss and now he has left behind a medical career that could be very promising as well as his society place in Philadelphia. He’s done all of this so that he can devote himself totally to studying mental disease and coming up with ways to treat it.
Amelia Matthew would be just another patient to him, except for the fact that he is present when she channels a spirit. It would appear that she is not disturbed but instead does have a very real gift. Then a mother comes to him looking for her daughter who has gone missing, and she believes is at the asylum.
Andrew turns to Amelia to get her to use her gift to try and figure out whether the daughter could be at the asylum. They work together to try to get to the bottom of things and start to find evidence that a deadly conspiracy is at hand.
Now it is more than just the liberation of Amelia that is at stake. She has to get her gift under control and ultimately try to use it so that they can catch a killer, or one of them might end up being the next victim. Can they figure out what is going on and resolve it before it’s too late? Read this book to find out!
