This is a story about a family set in the heartland. Three siblings who have grown up and have lived in a shadow of unresolved grief since their mother disappeared when they were young are the focus of this novel.
Everyone who lives in Emlyn Springs, Nebraska is familiar with the tale of Hope Jones. She was the wife of a physician who had a vision and dreams for their small town. But before she could achieve them, she was swept away in the great tornado of 1978.
For her three young children, they miss her dearly. They may have a solid life with their father who is distant and with the best friend of their mother Viney, but it’s not the same as having their mother there.
Larken is the oldest out of all of them and is employed as an art history professor. However, he always finds himself pursuing food as a way to deal with a hunger of a different sort that he does not know how to fix.
Then there’s the only son, Gaelan. He’s a telegenic weatherman and he has spent his life devoting himself to being able to predict what cannot be predicted. His profession and more all depend on his frame being fit and his smile being at the ready. There’s also Bonnie, the youngest of the family. She’s an archivist who is looking along the side of the road to find out more about her mother’s legacy as well as a way to get the permission that she seeks to move on.
Their mother disappeared decades ago, but they are all pulled home by the passing of their father. In the process, they must come back to the tragedy that is at the center of all of their lives and maybe process some of what they have been through and stand more firmly in where they currently are today.
