Stewart Binns is a published British author and filmmaker. He is known for producing many documentaries, several of which have won awards.
Stewart was born August 2, 1950. He was born in Lancaster but grew up in Burnley, Lancashire. He was raised solely by his mother and attended St. Theodore’s Secondary Modern School and then Burnley Municipal College for A-levels. He then studied at Lancaster University, graduating with a BA in politics and modern history and then getting his MA in international relations from the University of Sussex. He also attended the University of London to get his MSc in Sociology of Education.
He was working at Lancaster University for his doctorate but realized that it was going nowhere in 1974. Stewart decided to get a position working at the BBC as part of their Audience Research Department working on a study on media influence.
Stewart then worked as a school teacher for many years and passed selection for 21 SAS in 1980, serving until 1983. He rejoined the BBC in 1985, working in Current Affairs and Documentary Features. Stewart then joined Trans World International, part of the International Management Group, working in the television arm for two decades and eventually becoming Director of Special Products.
He was briefly Head of Production for Octagon CSI. He started Big Ape Media, a media company, in 2006 with his wife Lucy. His television credits extend to the In-Colour genre of programs, which include Britain at War in Colour as well as The Second World War in Colour, which won a Peabody.
He has also done historical work including the Chasing Churchill broadcast on PBS. He has also produced Indochine: A People’s War in Colour, a 2009 documentary that tells the tale of the people of Indochina as well as the battle they have conducted to get their freedom over the course of thirty years and through the process of three wars. There has also been Korea: The Forgotten War in Colour, as well as Seisen: the Rise and Fall of the Japanese Empire. He has also produced India: A Visual Homage, and Mao: A Study in Tyranny, as well as Journey of Hope.
He has also produced sporting programs and projects, including Trans World Sport and FIFA Futbol Mundial. He produced a variety of documentaries on the Olympics, which include Olympic Century and The Olympic Series. He also launched the Olympic Television Archive Bureau, which he ran for ten years, which retrieved and restore all of the official Olympic Game films going back to the 1936 Berlin Games. He was a producer of the BBC documentary film Daley: Olympic Superstar. He also produced Tiger, the official biographical documentary on the athlete, as well as Wimbledon and the documentary The People’s Game, FIFA’s official football history.
Binns has also expanded into writing historical novels. He has written the Making of England series, and then written books about the Great War. The first book to come out in the Making of England series was Conquest, which was about the Norman Invasion of England in 1066. It was followed by Crusade, Anarchy, and Lionheart, to make it a quartet.
He has also written nonfiction. This includes The Greatest: Who is Britain’s Top Sports Star?, and Second World War in Colour as well as Britain at War in Colour, America at War in Colour, and British Empire in Colour.
Stewart has been part of the Reform Club for over three decades and has belonged to the Special Forces Club for a decade. He belongs to SPAB, the group Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, as well as the Vernacular Architecture Group, the Royal Television Society, the Royal Society of Arts and The Artists Rifles Regimental association.
Stewart has supported the Burnley Football Club for years. He is married and resides with his wife Lucy in Somerset, England. They have two sons, twin boys named Charlie and Jack. He also has an older son, Adam, and is a grandfather.
Stewart has been awarded a variety of awards and recognition for his work. He has received a Peabody, a BAFTA, four RTS awards, and a Grierson. He has been made a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts, has done seminars at universities, and is a visiting professor to the University of Bedfordshire.
