Susan Cain is a published author and a speaker.
Born in 1968, she likes listening over talking, cozy chats over being in group settings, and reading over socializing. She likes to speak softly and think before doing so. She has conquered her fear of public speaking to give many talks over the years.
Susan is known for having big dreams and goals. She lives on the Hudson River banks in a captain’s cottage from 1822. She is married and shares her home with her husband and sons. She loves to write, read, hang out in cafes, and go places around the world along with her family. She also likes tennis and to try cooking every so often.
She is a best-selling author, known for her bestselling book on the New York Times, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Taking. Her book Bittersweet: How Sorrow and Longing Make Us Whole was an Oprah’s Book Club pick.
Susan has worked to explore the world of being introverted and how it can help people achieve happiness. Her books have sold well and have been translated into over three dozen languages so that they are available to people all over the globe. Her TED talks have received over fifty million views. She also hosts the Audible series, A Quiet Life in Seven Steps, and the online community Quiet Life. She has a newsletter called Kindred Letters.
She has been named The Top 6th Influencer in the world by LinkedIn. She also is partnered with Dan Pink, Adam Grant, and Malcolm Gladwell to curate the Next Big Idea Book Club, which donates proceeds to literacy programs for children.
She has had her writing published in places such as The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, The Economist, and The New York Times. She has spoken at places such as West Point, Harvard, the United States Treasury, P&G, PIXAR, and Google. She is the recipient of the Toastmasters International Golden Gavel Award for Communication and Leadership and the Harvard Law School’s Celebration Award for Thought Leadership. Inc. Magazine named her one of the top 50 Leadership and Management Experts.
She graduated from Princeton University in 1989 with an AB in English. She grew up in New York as the youngest of three. She would go on to get a JD degree in 1993 from Harvard Law School and was an honors graduate both times.
Susan worked as an attorney for years before becoming a negotiations consultant and a staff member for an educational non-profit. She left corporate law and consulting to spend time at home with her family and write. Her interest in introversion came from her own aversion to public speaking.
Prior to giving a TED talk in 2012, she prepared for a year by joining Toastmasters as well as working with the TED speaking coach. She also worked for an acting coach for six days before the talk. Her book Quiet would go on to be featured and shared all over the web and media, validating many. She has gone on to give many speeches and inspired more talks about introversion versus extroversion.
She formed her own communication class on public speaking online within a year of giving her first TED Talk. She also designs office space along with Steelcase to provide quiet areas where employees can enjoy privacy. Susan announced the Quiet Revolution at her second TED Talk, which introduced the idea of this office space with the purpose of fighting an erosion of privacy and focus in offices of the modern day. The Quiet Leadership Institute was also formed, an organization that provided tools and resources to others. She would give another TED talk in 2019, about the hidden power ‘of sad songs and rainy days’.
Her first TED talk video received a million views faster than any videos that had been aired previously and was in the 98th percentile of the most-watched TED videos of all time. She also was named one of the TED All-Stars, and presented a second time at the thirtieth anniversary conference.
Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking is the book from Susan Cain that began the Quiet Revolution. This book was a 2012 winner for the Goodreads Choice Award Best Nonfiction Book.
When it comes to people, many of the ones that we know may be introverts. In fact, Cain claims that at least a third of those we know are introverts. Just what is an introvert, exactly? They’re the type of person that might want to listen instead of preferring to talk. They may like creating but not like promoting themselves. They might like to work solo as opposed to in teams. Cain says that many famous introverts such as Dr. Seuss, Chopin, Steve Wozniak, and Rosa Parks have contributed to society in many great ways.
While reading through these pages, the reader will learn about how the author thinks that introverts and dramatically undervalued and what is lost through this process. She also looks at the extrovert ideal and how it has risen throughout the time of the twentieth century and has come to sink through our culture so deeply.
Susan also shows the reader various introverts who have been successful. A public speaker who gives high powered talks and then recharges alone after, or a salesman who uses the power of questions to get what he wants. These stories and more make up this well-researched and ultimately interesting book! Check it out and see why it was such a best-seller, now available with a reader’s guide as well as additional content.
