Susie Tate is a British romance fiction novelist best known for the Broken Heart series, a feel-good and addictive series of contemporary novels. Even though she is best known for her novels, she still works a day job and is a Dorset, England-based General practitioner. She has spent more than twenty years with the National Health Service (NHS), working in different medical specialties before she moved into general practice. It is from Dorset, where she lives with her husband and three children and their dog, that she also writes her bestselling novels. Her background working as a physician is evident in her novels as she usually provides authentic perspectives into the dynamics and challenges of hospital medicine in her storytelling. She published Broken Heart Syndrome, the debut novel of the series, in 2014 and now has more than a dozen works of fiction to her name. Beyond the Broken Heart series, she is the author of the Daydreamer and the Beg, Borrow or Steal series, in addition to several standalone titles.
In her personal life, Susie Tate has lived a life marked by advocacy and resilience. She had to live through her husband’s diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease, a progressive neurodegenerative condition sometimes known as ALS. It was a life-altering diagnosis that forced Susie to adjust her professional commitments and spend more time with family. Together, they have become actively involved in spreading awareness about ALS. In this quest, they support organizations such as My Names’5 Doddie Foundation and the Motor Neurone Disease Association, which provide support for those suffering from the condition and do research, too.
Susie Tate’s debut novel, Broken Heart Syndrome, is a beautiful work that tells the story of a reclusive and shy doctor named Frankie. While in medical school, she had spent years admiring Tom Langley only for him to humiliate her in public and destroy her self-esteem. 10 years later, she is his subordinate in the Cardiology department as she waits to get into palliative care training. She soon finds that Tom is ruthless, critical, and cold, even though he does not remember her. She keeps her head down, telling herself that it is only for six months before she is out. However, things come to a head when she has to stand up to Tom, who has been ignoring her vulnerable patients. As the tensions rise, past hurts are brought to the fore, and Tom realizes that his behavior is being fueled by hurt pride and arrogance. He is determined to prove that he is not the cruel bully Frnkie is convinced he is. But Frankie is dealing with deep scars, and trusting is going to be an uphill battle. With her history of self-doubt and abuse, she may never believe herself worthy of love unless Tom can be very convincing.
Susie Tates Sticks and Stones tells the story of Lou, who has been in love with Dylan ever since they were in medical school. But Dylan has always considered her a friend as he preferred women like Frankie, her best friend, who was more reserved and quiet. After she heard him say that she was high maintenance, she knew that all she was ever going to get from him was friendship. A little over a decade later, they get drunk and fall into bed, but Dylan remembers nothing from that night. Working together in Elderly Care, Dylan wants to work with Lou to avoid real work, but the friendship vibe has shifted. Ever since he woke up in her flat, he had been having strange dreams even though he refuses to acknowledge that he is developing feelings for her. When there is a misunderstanding, he lashes out and only realizes what he has lost when Lou calls it quits. Her energy, wit, and warmth had always kept him grounded, and now he needs to stand up to the challenge of mending the heart just like he mends broken bones as a surgeon.
Tate showed she still had it with the publishing of Beyond Repair, the third of the Broken Heart series. This is the story of Katie, a woman adored for her deep care for others, beauty, and vibrant personality. Nonetheless, she is prone to mishaps, overly chatty, and a bit scatterbrained, but this does not prevent people from thinking she is endearing, except for Sam. The latter is a cold, intense, and brooding man who cannot stand her. His intimidating presence always made her more nervous, clumsy, and snorty in her laughs. From his icy glare, she knows he wants her as far away from him as possible. On her part, she has demons from her past, which she has always tried to keep hidden. When these demons threaten Katie, Sam has an unexpected reaction as he is determined to protect her from any danger. It turns out that he is dealing with his own demons from his days in the Special Forces, and he forces himself to be emotionless. But they are getting closer the more he protects her, and if he does not detach himself soon, things may just get out of control for both of them.
