On March 13, 2018, the stand-alone semi-autobiographical children’s book ‘Like Vanessa’ was published by Charlesbridge Publishing. It was illustrated by the talented Vanessa Brantley-Newton and was well-received by readers of all ages. The book offered a powerful story for children to enjoy and learn from, making it a timeless classic.

Set in 1983, Vanessa Martin’s life was anything but glamorous. Growing up in public housing in Newark, NJ with an incarcerated mother, an addicted grandfather, and her own struggles with self-confidence, Vanessa felt helpless. But when a teacher suggested Vanessa participate in a beauty pageant, Vanessa began to see herself in a new light.

Despite not winning the pageant, Vanessa learned that her self-worth was more than the scores of her performance or her interview answers. She realized that she didn’t need a crown to find beauty in her own skin.

My Day with the Panye

‘My Day with the Panye’ was published by Candlewick Press on March 16, 2021. It was illustrated by Sara Palacios and was created for children to enjoy. The book was released internationally and is a stand-alone title from the publisher.

Fallon, a youth from the hills near Port-au-Prince, had a dream of taking a large woven basket to the market, just like her Manman. She tried to mimic the action by plaiting her hair into a mouchwa and placing an empty panye on her head. It proved to be a challenge, but with a resolute BOOM! she was eventually able to carry it.

My Day with the Panye is a lyrical and uplifting story of family heritage, cultural tradition, and optimism for the future. The illustrations demonstrate the splendor of Haiti and an author’s note offers additional facts about the ancient practice of balancing a panye.
