Terri Osburn is an American prolific author of contemporary romance novels that include the Anchor Island, Ardent Springs, and Shooting Stars series. Terri has always loved reading books ever since she was a young girl subsisting on the classics such as “Little Women”, “The Hound of Baskervilles”, and “The Wizard of Oz”. During her high school years, she graduated into Romance novels, where she read the likes of LaVyrle Spence, Woodiwiss Kathleen, and Judith McNaught, before she got into Johanna Lindsey, Dorothy Garlock, and Julie Garwood among many others during the nineties. Her bookshelves groan under the weight of torn and tattered classics full of lust, love, passion, and most of all happy endings. From the small charming town romances to the boardroom, romping regency ballrooms to the Wild West, she has it all. Before she became a professional author, she was a civil servant and worked as a train conductor, caterer, fundraiser, and procurement official. One of her most interesting of occupations was Country radio DJ at a mall, one of the most bizarre of jobs for a writer. Terri’s novels have made the Wall Street Journal bestseller lists, and made the finals for the Contemporary Single Title for the 2012 Golden Heart for her unpublished draft of her debut. Her novels have gone on to sell over a million copies across the globe. She is a member of the Music City Romance Writers, Romance Writers of America, and Novelists, Inc. She lives in middle Tennessee with her daughter, two terriers, and four cats.

Similar to many of her contemporaries, Terri Osburn’s journey to publishing was not an easy one. By January of 2013, she had several rejections for two of her manuscripts, which was quite depressing for the aspiring author. She finally got her big break when her agent Jeanne Adams called her in March to inform her that her manuscript had made the finals of the RWA Golden Heart Contest. Given the contest is something of the Oscar for unpublished authors, it was quite exhilarating for Osburn to make finalist. She had spent about six years between 2006 and 2012 doubting if she was made for a life as a writer, and even thought of quitting several times. However, her determination would not let her quit, as she kept learning and improving over the years. Nonetheless, she was not so naïve as to believe that everyone that sat at the computer to write a novel made it. However, her mantra was that all that got off their chairs were certain never to publish and thus would never quit. Her tenacity would finally pay off when the aptly titled “Meant to Be” was published in 2013 to much success on Amazon Kindle, out muscling the likes of R.R. Martin and Stephen King to become a number one bestseller. After her second title, she became very prolific writing each of her novels in twelve weeks or less. She now has more than ten novels to her name in three series written in a little over three years since publishing her debut.

The Anchor Island, Ardent Springs and Shooting Stars series of novel by Terri Osburn are contemporary romances. The lead man in the novels is typically a grumpy and gruff character who is mistrustful of women and relationships, who falls in love with the very thing he used to despise. The lead woman is normally a hard as nails professional who has been living a life of societal norms that please everyone but herself, until she bumps into the handsome and gruff hero. The sizzle between the two characters is evident right from the time they meet. However, they try to suppress it by avoiding each other or treating each other despicably. Typically, either there are complications from another relationship or from a community that expects better from one of their own. Much soul-searching often leads to a blooming romance, which is fuelled by the two protagonist being left in a space alone. For instance, the couples in Anchor Island find themselves alone on an island with the object of their love and desire resulting in the inevitable romance. The setting often makes for an intimate and pleasurable relationship that ultimately results in the protagonists reevaluating what it means to be man or woman, or future husband or wife. In the race to find success in their professional and love lives, they finally accept that they will find themselves when they make the decision to be themselves, in surrendering to love and what it has in store for them.

“Meant to Be” is the delightful first contemporary romance by Terri Osburn. The lead protagonist in the novel is Beth Chandler, a woman that spent most of her life living to please others. She went to law school because it was the dream of her grandparents, and married Lucas her workaholic boyfriend because she did not want to disappoint him. Despite her boat phobia, she had taken a ferry across the lake to go see his parents where she suffers panic attack that turns into a blessing in disguise. She meets a sexy and tall stranger on the boat who helps her deal with her panic attack and in the process makes her heart skip a beat for a completely different reason. Soon she gets a real reason to panic, as the tall handsome stranger is none other than her future brother-in-law Joe. Could she face the prospect of leaving one man for his brother, even if the man is more interested in becoming partner at the expense of his relationship? Deep down she knows Joe is everything she ever wanted and not Lucas.

“Up to the Challenge” is the second novel set on Anchor Island, featuring the indomitable Sid a boat mechanic. She is not an island native though she has been on the island so long that she feels like it is her home. She is somewhat abrasive and tough and is what many will consider a tomboy. She has never gotten over Lucas Dempsey, a successful lawyer who had been her high school crush and now lives on the mainland. He had always wanted to leave the island and did at the earliest opportunity. Dempsey does not know of Sid’s feelings seeing her as a tough girl in greasy baggy clothes who loves to work on cars. Moreover, he is still recovering from the loss of a fiancée that had chosen his brother over him. But he has come back home after he learns of his father’s illness to help with the family bar. Sid who has known the family for years comes to help, and soon they are forced into a space that ultimately changes Lucas’s perception of the woman beneath the baggy and greasy clothes.
