American Carnage: On the Front Lines of the Republican Civil War and the Rise of President Trump is a 2019 book by Tim Alberta. This is an insider look at the modern Republican Party in the making and how a decade of cultural upheaval, populist outrage, and ideological warfare made the GOP especially vulnerable to a hostile takeover by Donald Trump.
The United States saw the 2016 election happen and Alberta saw it as a watershed moment. He explains in this book that to understand the victory of Trump here is as the consequence of this era of polarization and partisanship as opposed to its creator.
This is the story of a president and how he rose based on a party’s collapse and a country’s evolution. Republicans were up against a moment of reckoning after George W. Bush and Obama left office. They didn’t have a generation of new leaders, they had no vision, and there was no energy in the base of the party. But Obama pursued the progressive agenda and paired with the nation’s changing societal and demographic identity, the right saw a fire lit under them that returned Republicans back to power and opened things up for a struggle to solidify the identity of the party.
The factions that ended up coming out were led by absolutists like Ted Cruz and the other led by pragmatists such as John Boehner, and engaged in a series of clashes and attempts to grab control. The GOP’s internal fissures meant that it was legislatively impotent and that led to a bigger resentment when it comes to the political class and its institutions. Everything was set up perfectly for an outside party to come and crash it all.
When Trump announced his run in the summer of 2015, a candidate met the moment at exactly the right time. Viewing him as the culmination of a civil war inside the GOP that had been going on for a decade while paired with a variety of disruptive factors during that period may help us understand how he won the White House.
Alberta asks some serious questions inside this book, such as how a party once obsessed with national insolvency came to be heading some trillion dollar deficits, and how long a party such as this one will be able to survive.
Full of original reporting, this book pulls from hundreds of exclusive interviews with a variety of figures and takes readers behind the scenes of this period of time for an entirely new view as he chronicles this political age. Check out American Carnage to read along with every detailed word.
The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory: American Evangelicals in an Age of Extremism is a 2023 book by Tim Alberta. This was an instant New York Times bestseller that was named one of Barack Obama’s Favorite Books of the Year.
It was also picked as a Best Book of the Year by Air Mail and the Economist, and the New York Times called it “Brave and absorbing”. The Los Angeles Times called it an “astonishingly clear-eyed look at a murky movement”. If you’re interested in nonfiction books that tackle specific topics, this is the book for you.
In this book, Tim Alberta tackles Evangelical Christians, some of the most polarizing people alive in America today. Alberta himself is a practicing Christian and he is the son of an evangelical pastor and puts together a portrait of the American evangelical movement as told through regular church going people, small town preachers, celebrity revivalists and more.
He tells the story of a faith that has been lessened by fear and a reputation damaged by perpetual scandal. American Christians have in some places found that their love of country has turned into right wing nationalist fervor. The arc of the modern evangelical movement is retraced in this book and Alberta documents a growing fracture inside of American Christianity.
Getting to the highest levels of the American evangelical movement, this is a work of investigative journalism that looks into the abuse of political power from conservative Christians while also highlighting the battles evangelicals are fighting to show the disconnect from Scripture.
This and a secularizing America that doesn’t trust the evangelical church are coming together along with so much more is included in a work that questions whether the American evangelical movement still glorifies God and what its current purpose is. Check out The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory: American Evangelicals in an Age of Extremism by Tim Alberta to see what he has to say in a fascinating look at a unique part of America.
