Tonya Hurley’s Ghostgirl is one very interesting start to a series. It introduces Charlotte Usher, a girl who will do anything to get noticed and become a popular girl, who is friends with Petula Kensington, the lead cheerleader at her school. She also hopes to catch the eye of Damen, the most popular guy even though he is Petula’s girlfriend. Unfortunately, she chokes on a gummy bear on the first day of school and starts afresh in the afterlife. Her dreams have gone up in flames and she could not be any more crushed. Things only get worse when she realizes that like many other students in the afterlife, she still has to study and graduate. However, she still has high hopes of achieving what she had set out to do before everything went haywire. She will do anything to win over Damen and she may just have an edge over Petula since she is now working with her younger sister Scarlet Kensington. It is a heartfelt yet satirical work in which the author explores the lengths most people will go to make themselves more visible.

Homecoming the second novel of the Ghostgirl series picks up from where the first left off. Charlotte is back with more adventures alongside Petula and her friend Scarlet but in very different settings. Charlotte is a recent graduate from Dead Ed and now finds herself working in customer service. She is charged with waiting to answer calls from Those in Need and then providing sound advice by being the still small voice they need. Charlotte is living with a friend named Maddy who controls her to no end and it does seem she doesn’t want her to keep any of her old friends. However, many of her old friends have settled in eternity particularly well. Still, her favorite people including Scarlet, her BFF are alive even though Petula, her sister, is relegated to a coma while Damen does not come around much. At the end of it all, Charlotte grows a lot, Damen and Scarlett become a solid couple, Maddy is finally defeated and Petula showcases a slightly nicer personality.

Tonya Hurley’s novel Lovesick sees Charlotte make a comeback this time with a task to complete alongside a boyfriend. She needs to go to Hawthorne and help a former classmate who has a frustrating problem just before prom. As usual, things get complicated and she hates that Eric, her new boyfriend, has just been assigned to Scarlett, her best friend, while she is left with Damen. As would be expected, the couples soon find themselves confused about what is going on. Scarlett is not too sure if Damen is truly in love with her while Charlotte does not like how much time Eric and Scarlett are spending together. To add to it all, Charlotte still has to deal with a possession mystery that may be connected to a new girl in school, a new look, and a prom night that could make couple relationships even more confusing. It might take a long time before Charlotte can find rest in the afterlife.
