Trisha Ashley is a renowned and bestselling English writer of romantic fiction, chick lit, women’s fiction, and contemporary stories. She has more than 14 novels to her name and is particularly famous for writing the Lancashire series of novels. Currently, Ashley resides in North Wales and loves to explore food, old houses, gardens, etc. Such preoccupations can be seen recurringly in her stories. Usually, Ashley’s novels contain stories of romance and are filled with humorous wit. Her book, A Winter’s Tale, was shortlisted for the Melissa Nathan prize in 2009 and was listed as a Times bestseller. Author Ashley is an active member of the Association of Romantic Novelists, the Welsh Academi, and the Society of Authors. She was born in St. Helens, Lancashire, The United Kingdom.

Prior to becoming a full-time author, Ashley used to work for making stained glass and/or plumbing. The things that she likes to indulge in very often include eating, painting, drinking, reading literary biographies, etc. Ashley often jokes about having previous hobbies of getting divorced and being on the move with her stuff. The literary career of Ashley did not start like that of most of the authors. She was always interested in reading books. Then, a moment came into her life when she thought that she could do better. Subsequently, she started writing stories and showing them to literary agents for publishing. Ashley’s big breakthrough came when she was discovered by her agent named Judith Murdoch. It was at the suggestion of Judith that Ashley began making small changes in her writing style and started getting her books published.

Ashley says that she doesn’t get the ideas for writing her stories from one particular source. In fact, she depends on multiple sources in this regard. She considers each of her books as her personal favorite when she is in the process of developing them. Ashley believes that a big occupational hazard with being an author is lack of income. Over the years, she has had to take up numerous unpleasant or less paying jobs to support her writing habit. During the first few years of her career, Ashley used to write satire and was highly influenced by the works of authors like Tom Sharpe. For Ashley, her writing process remains much the same for every new novel. Ashley likes to advise the new authors that they should try to get into the habit of writing daily and try to maintain that with full sincerity. Sometimes, Ashley becomes so much obsessed with her characters and stories that she remains awake throughout the night. And when those stories/characters are appreciated by the readers, she feels that it was worth being awake all night. Ashley is a pet lover and has several dogs at her home.

The books of this series have beautiful countryside settings of Lancashire villages and contain different sets of primary characters, whose romantic lives are described by Ashley. Some of the essential characters depicted by Ashley in the novels include Tom, Lizzy, Nick, Ritch, Sophy Winter, Jack Lewis, Seth, Ben Richards, Josie Gray, Libby Martin, Noah Sephton, Chloe Lyon, Raffy Sinclair, Jude Martland, Holly, Tansy Poole, Ivo Hawksley, etc. The debut book of this romantic comedy series is entitled ‘Sweet Nothings’. It is also known as ‘The Magic of Christmas’ and was first released in 2006 before its re-release in 2011 by Avon publication. This book’s heartwarming and deliciously seasonal story is set in a beautiful village in Lancashire called Middlemoss.

Initially, it is mentioned that Lizzy has made up her mind to leave her cheating husband named Tom. But, before she could do that, Tom dies a tragic death. Lizzy tries to keep her mind away from her loss by keeping herself busy with her day-to-day life. A welcoming distraction from the Christmas Pudding Circle attracts her attention. She learns that several of her friends have decided to swap their recipes in the annual celebration and also participate in the competition to win against the local cookery writer named Nick. In the meantime, the entire village is preparing for the upcoming annual Mystery Play. Lizzy tries to find a man to play the character of Adam in her play. She wonders whether it is going to be the charismatic and handsome actor Ritch or someone close to her home. Whatever happens at the play, Lizzy looks forward to a Christmas that she is not going to forget for the rest of her life.

Another exciting novel written by Ashley in this series is known as ‘A Winter’s Tale’. It was also published by Avon in 2008. This novel also features a romantic comedy story and contains the central characters in the roles of Sophy Winter, Seth, Jack Lewis, etc. The book opens by showing that Sophy Winter unexpectedly inherits a crumbling mansion called Winer’s End in the beautiful countryside of Lancashire. She becomes very happy and starts to feel that all her prayers have now been answered. Sophy swaps life as a housekeeper for favoring her staff, but soon realizes that looking after the big mansion is a tough challenge. Also, the eccentric inhabitants of the mansion make life difficult for her. Later, it is discovered that Shakespeare had stayed in the mansion when he was young and this news spreads like fire.

The people of the village become curious to know what Sophy has planned. One particular man named Jack Lewis shows too much interest in Sophy and her mansion. However, she seems romantically attracted towards her handsome head gardener named Seth. The events that follow next in Sophy’s life force her to deal with collapsing buildings, squabbling neighbors, and ghostly sightings of an ancestor. She starts to think that the mansion is not as much a gift as she had thought. This book provides a charming story of romance and humor. It suits best for the fans of Jill Mansell and Katie Fforde. The engaging characters, excellent storyline, and intriguing setting make this book an exciting read. Many critics and reviewers have praised it for its unique story and rich cast of characters.
