Vicky Alvear Shecter
Vicky Alvear Shecter wishes that she had a time machine in order to return to the glory days of ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt. Until she is able to find herself one, she writes about the fabulous and famous lives of the ancients and their gods instead.

Her lifelong fascination with ancient history led to her first writing credit when she co-wrote the adult book called “Alexander the Fabulous: The Man Who Brought the World to Its Knees”.

As a docent for the Michael C. Carlos Museum of Antiquities at Emory University, she delights in sharing her fascination and passion with the ancient world with talks and tours about the museum’s world renown ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian galleries.

While writing for adults, she focuses on the deeply superstitious and complex lives of people that lived back in ancient times.

Coming up with ideas for her novels happens in all sorts of ways. Typically, there is some aspect of history that surprises her and fascinates her and she wants to go even deeper into exploring it.

For “Curses”, she was fascinated by how people thought about religion and curses and how they would’ve used their views to deal with some unimaginable disaster. For Cleopatra’s Moon, she was fascinated by the fact that Cleopatra VII had a daughter and that she was the only one of the queen’s four kids to survive all the way until adulthood, and that she wound up ruling in North Africa. Generally it is something that she just cannot quit thinking about.

She actually didn’t begin writing until fairly late, but she’s always loved reading, history, archaeology, and the ancient world.

“Alexander the Fabulous” is a non-fiction book that was released in 2004. Alexander conquered the known world. He united it for the first time with a common language. His military tactics are still studied and used by the warriors of today. He’s considered to be the most brave and heroic warrior in all of history. But (and even more importantly): the guy was hot. His boyfriends were even hotter. Alexander traveled with an advance publicity team. He could throw these hissy fits which would take Liza Minelli’s breath away. The guy was so vain that if Preparation H existed, his enemies would’ve rubbed it on his ego. He had fag hags hanging off of him just like laundry.

We’re approaching 2,350 years after the man’s death and people are still fascinated by Alexander the Great. Even Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, the people that gave us math, language, and philosophy, did not have Oliver Stone making films about them. All of the great conquerors that followed Alexander attempted to emulate him in some way.

“Cleopatra Rules! (The Amazing Life of the Original Teen Queen)” is the first stand alone novel and was released in 2010. Evil. Dangerous. Good. Glamorous. Would the real Cleopatra stand up, please?

Just about everything that we know about the final queen of Egypt comes from her enemies like the Romans. Now it is time to meet the “real” Cleopatra, who was a ruler much more complex, powerful, and brilliant than we ever knew. She didn’t just rock the boat once she became the queen at the age of 17. She rocked the world with some brilliant alliances which kept her in control and in power.

Mark Antony attempted to put Egypt under his thumb, she negotiated for (and won) more territory than any other Egyptian ruler had snagged in entire generations.

Cleopatra did not just play by the rules, she also made them up as she went along. She bowed to nobody, and that includes Octavian, the future Caesar Augustus who never missed a chance to pump out any anti-Cleopatra propaganda.

The queen of Egypt has been fascinating the world for thousands of years now. It is time to learn why. So get on your knees, commoner. The world’s most outrageous and brilliant queen, Cleopatra VII, the last Pharaoh of Egypt will soon make her entrance.

This includes endnotes, maps, glossary, index, timeline, and sources.

“Cleopatra’s Moon” is the second stand alone novel and was released in 2011. “The Luxe” meets the ancient world in this extraordinary tale about Cleopatra’s daughter.

Selene’s grown up in a palace on the Nile with Mark Antony and Cleopatra (her parents and the most powerful and brilliant rulers on Earth). However Octavianus, the jealous Roman Emperor wants Egypt all for himself, and once war finally does come, Selene faces the loss of all that she has ever loved. Forced to build a new life in Octavianus’ household in Rome, she finds she’s torn between two young men and two potential destinies, up until she reaches out to claim her own.

A stunning novel that brings to life the passions and personalities of one of the greatest dramas in all of history, and also offers up a wonderful new heroine in Selene.

“Curses and Smoke” is the third stand alone novel and was released in 2014. After your world gets blown apart, what are you going to hold onto?

Tag’s a medical slave, merely doomed to spend his whole life healing the injured gladiators of his master. However his warrior’s heart is yearning to fight in the gladiator ring himself and earn just enough money so that he can win his freedom.

Lucia is the daughter of Tag’s owner, and doomed by her dad’s greed to marry a much older Roman man. However she loves studying the natural world that surrounds her home in Pompeii, and lately she has been noticing some strange occurrences in the landscape: this sulfurous smell that’s in the air; some small lakes vanishing.

When these two childhood friends reconnect, each one with longings of their own, they fall passionately in love. However while they plot out their escape from the city, this Patrician fighter reveals plans of his own for them; to Lucia’s dad, who imprisons Tag as punishment. Then this earthquake shakes Pompeii, in the very first sign of the chaos that is to come. Are they going to be able to find one another again before this volcano destroys their entire world?
