Warren Wiersbe was a noteworthy American author of Christian literature. He was well known for his theological works. Wiersbe was also a popular Christian clergyman, conference speaker, and Bible teacher. His best-known works include the ‘BE’ series of books, the Kregel Classic Sermons, The Bible Exposition Commentary series, etc. Wiersbe was a pastor at Chicago’s Moody Church between 1971 and 1978. Later, he was selected as the successor of Theodore Epp to be the director of radio ministry’s Back to the Bible. Author Wiersbe was born in East Chicago, Indiana, United States, on May 16, 1929. He had three elder siblings, all of whom were born to Gladys and Fred Wiersbe. He studied at East Chicago’s Washington High School. During a Youth For Christ rally at his school in 1945, he decided to turn into a committed Christian.
Following his graduation from high school, Wiersbe studied at Roosevelt University, Indianapolis-based Indiana University, and Northern Baptist Theological Seminary located in Lombard, Illinois, thereby, graduating in 1953. In the same year, he met and married his lovely wife named Betty Warren. The couple had 4 children. Wiersbe’s death occurred on May 2, 2019, in Chicago. Before his death, he and Betty had gifted their huge personal library to the Ohio-based Cedarville University. This library contains more than 13,000 volumes. When Wiersbe attended the seminary, he was chosen to become Central Baptist Church’s pastor in 1951. Wiersbe fulfilled his duties as the pastor until 1957. Between 1957 and 1961, he served as the director of Youth For Christ International’s Literature Division. Over the next decade, Wiersbe was the pastor of Covington, Kentucky-based Cavalry Baptist Church.
During his tenure, the church grew its seating congregation from eight hundred to two thousand. After this new construction, the church was able to draw members from the Tri-state Area of Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. Wiersbe’s Sunday sermons were shown on a local radio station in Cincinnati and were called Cavalry Hour. The highpoint in Wiersbe’s career came in 1971 when he was asked to pastor the Moody Church. This prestigious church is named after a popular 19th-century evangelist named Dwight L. Moody. While Wiersbe was at this church, he continued to be the speaker of the radio ministry’s nationally syndicated program called Songs in the Night, which moved there in 1968. Starting from 1979, Wiersbe began writing bi-weekly as Eutychus X for Christianity Today and continued until 1982. During those years, Wiersbe also taught classes of practical theology at Deerfield’s Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He is credited to have written the course material.
During Wiersbe’s pastorship in Chicago, he was given the opportunity to become a board member of the Slavic Gospel Association, where he remained until 1983. For ten years, he was the SGA board’s chairman. After this, Wiersbe moved on to work for the radio broadcast of Back to the Bible. He was the general director of the broadcast after Theodore Epp during the last 6 years of tenure. Wiersbe got the chance to take up the role of a Writer in Residence in 1995. He took this opportunity with both hands and moved to Cornerstone University, based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Later, he also became Grand Rapids Theological Seminary’s Distinguished Preaching Professor. He also contributed to Baker Book House as an editor.
Starting from the 1950s, Wiersbe wrote books based on the Bible’s teachings that were published under the labels of multiple publishing houses. Altogether, there are over 150 books penned by Wiersbe and the most popular ones among them consist of the ones in the ‘BE’ series. This series contains commentaries on Bible’s every book and has sold more than 4 million copies worldwide. Most of the information about Wiersbe’s life and work is available in his autobiography titled ‘Be Myself: Memoirs of a Bridgebuilder’.
An excellent book written by author Warren Wiersbe is known as ‘Be Basic’. It is a part of his ‘BE’ series and contains his commentary on Genesis one through eleven of the Bible. Through this book, Wiersbe has asked his followers to follow the preachings of the Bible and believe the simple truth of the word of God. David C. Cook published this book in 2010 after its original publishing in 1998. Wiersbe starts the book by saying that the world has turned into a confusing place. People get confronted by moral issues every day and feel that their judgment is getting clouded, which used to be quite clear at one time. He wonders when did things get transformed into such complications. Wiersbe suggested that instead of wasting time in wondering how our world underwent such huge transformations, people should think about the beginning and start making things right from that point.
In the end, he draws the attention of the audience to the book of Genesis, which talks about how God’s Word began to make important positive changes in the life of humans. It is only by following that path again that humans can achieve salvation in the real sense. Wiersbe stood by this belief throughout his life and even in his final days, he continued to tell people to turn themselves to God to achieve inner peace. Another mind-blowing book penned by Wiersbe is entitled ‘Be Delivered’. It was also released in 2010 by David C. Cook, after its first release in 1998. In this book, Wiersbe talks about following the path of God to find true freedom. According to Wiersbe, achieving freedom is just half of the story.
The entire world has been functioning on the central theme of freedom. People, groups, and entire nations have taken to it as a form of rallying cry. But, Wiersbe thinks being free without having boundaries can prove to be very costly. By giving the example of Exodus’s book, Wiersbe has provided a detailed study that offers a deep insight into deliverance’s pitfalls if discipline is not maintained. He has also shared with the readers how freedom is truly found by submitting to God and accepting His will for all of us. The updated version of this book contains study questions along with Ken Baugh’s new introduction. Wierse has tried to explore the requirement of maintaining a balance between freedom and responsibility. He has filled the narration with examples from the real world so that readers can find it easy to understand his words and follow God’s path. Wierse’s work clearly explains how one can achieve freedom in every area of his life.
