Wendy Monica Winter
Wendy Monica winter, M.Ed., is an award winning writer and dedicated teacher that lives with Calvin, her husband, in Squamish, British Columbia.

She loves bouncing around like Mamma Kangaroo especially on her feet, skis, and bike in her local mountains. Wendy is passionate about exploring new countries and cultures on our beautiful planet and it is this love that has led to her very first book.

Wendy was once an ultra-marathoner and her longest race was 1,000 miles in sixteen days, making endurance a not-so-secret secret skill of hers. Another superpower of hers is that she can make a nice meal for a bunch of people without too much notice.

The inspiration to write “Where’s My Joey?” came from teaching in Perth, Australia. She was sending a furry kangaroo album which she bought in a tourist shop and filled with her pictures of various Australian animals to her young nieces in Arkansas. While she was putting these photos in the album, she downloaded the story’s first draft and included it too. She went out and bought these speech bubble stickers and the next day the gift was put in the mail. At the back of the book are some shots from this original album.

Her sister-in-law, named Aurora Winter, has helped many authors in the writing and publishing of their books. She inspired Wendy to publish this book by guiding her through each step of the indie publishing process.

She finds that one interesting thing about her writing habits is that she doesn’t so much build a story in her mind but that she will all of a sudden have the whole thing in its entirety.

The most fun she had in creating “Where’s My Joey?” is sharing the story with other people. Her mom, Trudy Dorn, lives with Wendy and her husband. Trudy’s a children’s book illustrator and author too. At Halloween, they had a ton of fun handing out both their books.

And when they have young visitors, she loves playing “Where’s My Joey?” with them. Since Wendy has quite a collection of stuffed kangaroo animals and they take turns hiding Joey so that Mamma can look around for him. Cutest part is when a kid likes her hiding spot so much that during the next round they place Joey in the exact same spot.

Wendy enjoys writing children’s books because she is a teacher and loves connecting with kids of all ages. She also believes that some useful insights into life can be portrayed simply in a child’s picture book.

Being a children’s book author helps her deal with writer’s block, and she gets inspired to write just by tuning out and tuning in. Wendy’s favorite part of being a writer is that she is able to expand her community of heartfelt connections.

Roxana Chitanu, illustrator of “Where’s My Joey?”, far exceeded what Wendy was expecting from her as she illustrated it. She spent a bunch of time researching the Australian fauna and flora to ensure the book’s accuracy in every single one of the beautiful images appearing in the book. She didn’t miss a single thing.

Wendy’s favorite illustration is the one with Mamma Kangaroo reading to Joey. She loves the book that Mamma is holding with a picture on her holding the book which has a picture of her holding this book. This idea was inspired by the “Borax Girl” that mesmerized Wendy during her youth.

Wendy has some very dear friends that reside in Chartres, France and she has had the fortune to go to the Chartres Cathedral which their ancestors actually built. The labyrinth in this church inspired the idea of the maze found at the end of the book. She just likes the symbolism of having to go further away in order to reach your goal. She finds a lot of hope in this concept.

“Where’s My Joey?” won a Book Excellence Award Gold, Pinnacle Book Achievement Award Gold Winner, a Literary Titan Award Gold Winner, and a Wishing Shelf Book Award Bronze Winner.

She finds that the most meaningful award that she won was for the Wishing Shelf award because she is a teacher and it was decided on by British school children. Wendy also truly appreciates all of the constructive feedback that she gets from the teachers and children that Edward Trayer (also known as Billy Bob Buttons) from Wishing Shelf sent her way.
